“Rather than the clinician being with the patient in the operating room, you would have robots at the satellite hospitals, and the clinician could stay at the main hospital and connect remotely to perform procedures,” says Pierre Dupont about the future of medical robots. Children with the hereditary form of retinoblastoma, a rare childhood eye cancer, are at increased risk for developing intraocular disease, as well as other types of cancer — particularly sarcomas, brain tumors, and melanomas — throughout their life. To provide strategies for identifying and caring for patients with hereditary retinoblastoma, Junne Kamihara, MD, PhD, and her colleagues recently updated their recommendations as part of a series of consensus guidelines published by the American Association for Cancer Research’s Childhood Cancer Predisposition Workshop. The updates highlight an expanded focus on genetic testing for children with retinoblastoma and their families, an expanded discussion regarding screening recommendations for other cancers, and information for counseling of survivors of intraocular disease. ⤵️

In 2023, we performed the country’s first successful fetal embolization for vein of Galen malformation (VOGM), a new fetal surgical approach developed by our team. New results just published in JAMA build on that progress, showing continued promise from the ongoing trial: 📉 Reduced neonatal mortality from 90 to 43 percent ✔️ 3 of 5 treated patients show no neurodevelopmental delays On the significance of these findings, principal investigator, Darren Orbach, MD, PhD, says, “These early results demonstrate that fetal embolization is feasible, and show the importance of completing a clinical trial to really show that it is safe and effective.” As the study progresses, so does the potential to change outcomes for these high-risk patients: https://lnkd.in/ehVQVH5q
