We’re giving a big shout out to our incredible trail crew leaders who gathered today for their quarterly Crew Leader Meeting. These dedicated volunteers are the backbone of our trail maintenance program—helping plan workdays, manage tools and budgets, coordinate first aid and sawyer trainings, track volunteer hours, and more. We were especially honored to be joined by Eiji Suzuki, head of trail maintenance for Japan’s 信越トレイル Shin-etsu Trail —a trail inspired by the Appalachian Trail. Eiji (holding the Shin-etsu bear banner) joined the group for a photo and is pictured with Paul Curtin (right) and Les Love (left), who hiked a section of the Shin-etsu with him during their trip to Japan last summer. Eiji thru-hiked the A.T. in 2016. This is what trail community looks like—local commitment with global connections. Thank you to the Blue Ridge Parkway for use of their fantastic meeting room at the Visitor Center. The rebuild of the historic Walnut Mountain Appalachian Trail shelter is underway! This week, the concrete footpad was poured, and today the Waynesville Wednesday crew transported the logs from their staging location at the Hot Springs Fire Department to the build site. Originally constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938 using American chestnut logs, the Walnut Mountain shelter will now serve as an interpretive exhibit—offering visitors to Hot Springs the chance to experience an authentic A.T. shelter up close. It’s exciting to be part of the restoration and preservation of this historic structure. Stay tuned as CMC continues the rebuild throughout the week!
