Happy Pride Month! 🏳️🌈 As June begins, and with my 42nd birthday just around the corner, I find myself reflecting on the journey of our LGBTQIA+ community. The progress we've made is undeniable, yet the road to full equality stretches ahead. I remember being a closeted kid in a small, rural Maine town, finding solace in a dimly lit room watching "Queer as Folk," a world away from the open acceptance I craved. The fear of discovery was a constant companion. Fast forward to today: I'm a happily married man to my wonderful husband of nearly 16 years (legally for 2!), we have our fur-baby Otto, supportive families, and a life filled with love and professional fulfillment. Seeing my niece and nephew grow up in a world where "Uncle Danny and Uncle Nate" is simply a part of life fills me with immense joy and hope for the younger generation. They deserve to experience love and acceptance without the agonizing delays I faced. My professional journey has also evolved. I recall being unsure about being "out" at my first job in 2007. Now, I'm incredibly grateful to work at Rakuten, where I can bring my whole self to work without fear. Joining our Pride+ employee resource group in 2020 was a game-changer, providing connection, advocacy opportunities, and a true sense of belonging. In a political climate where DEI is under attack, I'm especially thankful for Rakuten's unwavering support. As a gay, legally blind individual, I'm empowered to champion our differences, because they truly make us stronger.
