The first day of school has got to be one of the most exciting and celebratory times of the year! Under the tremendous leadership of The School District of Philadelphia Superintendent Tony B. Watlington Sr., Ed.D. and Board of Education President Reginald L. Streater, Esq. — together, we are building schools with more learning opportunities that help set our youth up on paths that lead to good futures. To the families, thank you for trusting us with your children. We will keep working every day to make sure our schools are safe, welcoming, and filled with opportunity. And to the educators and staff, thank you for staying dedicated. You’re the heartbeat of our school system, and your work makes everything else possible. Have a wonderful first day, and an even better school year!

National Night Out is Philadelphia’s annual opportunity to bring neighborhoods together with a shared goal: building safer, stronger communities. On August 5, 2025, residents, Philadelphia Police officers, and community partners gathered across the city for block parties, cookouts, safety demonstrations, and youth-friendly activities—all centered on crime prevention and community outreach. The Philadelphia Police Department was proud to lead the way, giving neighbors a chance to meet their local officers, ask questions, and strengthen the trust that helps our city thrive.

A trailblazer. Yesterday, The City and Creative Philadelphia honored Dr. Sadie T.M. Alexander. Her excellence left a lasting societal impact because she stepped boldly through doors that – for decades – had been closed to others. Dr. Alexander — a Philadelphia native and civil rights leader — was the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in Economics in the United States, at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Alexander’s extraordinary life rooted in service and justice, will be immortalized with her very own statue out in front of our Municipal Services Building – reminding everyone of the progress we’ve made, and the work that lies ahead. We want to give a heartfelt congratulations to sculptor Vinnie Bagwell, a visual narrator, who gives voices to our ancestors through her powerful storytelling, for being selected as the artist who will create Dr. Alexander’s statue. We also want to thank Dr. Rae Alexander-Minter for joining us and continuing to carry her mother’s legacy.
