The City of Opportunity
About us
We're proud of our 200-year heritage. And today, Vallejo continues to be a friendly, active waterfront community that attracts innovative and hardworking people and businesses. This is reflected in Vallejo being ranked the hottest real estate market in the United States for the past twelve months. The City of Vallejo's story begins in 1844 when General Mariano G. Vallejo saw the promise of the area. Named after him and twice the site of the state capitol in the 1850s, Vallejo grew into an important shipping and naval center. Legend has it that Mare Island got its name after Gen. Vallejo drove a herd of horses across the Carquinez Strait. Established in 1854, Mare Island Naval Shipyard was the West Coast's first shipyard. Decommissioned in 1996, Mare Island is now home to more than 100 businesses and has become an industrial, commercial and residential engine for the Bay Area. A strong economy and affordable housing have meant new prosperity for Vallejo, as businesses and residents come to the city. Some are attracted by the beautifully restored Victorian homes and business fronts; others by the newer homes in the Northgate and Hiddenbrooke developments. The city recently earned Main Street designation, and as a result our downtown area has benefited from on-site training in effective commercial district revitalization, technical assistance, consulting services, networking activities, and site assessments from California Main Street. Waterfront and Mare Island redevelopment have become a community effort, with input from residents helping shape the future of what will become the most important economic generators for the city. The city's Ferry Terminal and ferry services have served as a model for the rest of the Bay Area, helping make Vallejo a transportation and commuter hub for the North Bay with over 1 million riders annually. Six Flags Marine World, restaurants and the Downtown Farmer's Market help make Vallejo the vibrant community it is today.

Hello Vallejo, Looks like we’ll have nice warm weather to close out the last couple weeks of summer before children in Vallejo head back to school. Hope you’ll enjoy the time with family at the August activities we’ve included in this Vallejo Weekly. At the City Council meeting last Tuesday, Council approved some exciting items such as the Honorary Street Sign Designations for CC Sabathia and R&B and funk group Con Funk Shun. Soon, you’ll see honorary street names along Gateway Drive for CC Sabathia and Florida Street for Con Funk Shun. Both groups will also hold special ceremonial events in the community next month. The City will provide more details on the events in the near future. Stay tuned. City Council was scheduled to be in recess until next month but there will now be a special meeting on Tuesday, August 12th to approve the use of opioid funds for the Broadway Project and approve some other Broadway Project-related agreements. City staff appreciates Council’s decision to hold the special meeting in hopes to have new tenants move into the Broadway Project by the end of August. Public Works continues to work with our pest control contractor to mitigate the rodent population in areas along the waterfront and downtown. We appreciate the community’s collaboration in addressing this issue. With school resuming soon, you’ll want to check out the details in this Weekly on backpack giveaways going on in Vallejo if your children are in need of fresh supplies. Also, National Night Out, which has previously taken place this first week of August, has switched to October 7 for Vallejo. Please see the flyer in this Weekly for more information. There are many ways to connect and stay involved with the City through National Night Out, Neighborhood Watch, and Vallejo Business Watch as seen in this Weekly. We encourage you to participate in these activities. With appreciation, Andrew Murray Vallejo City Manager https://lnkd.in/gzhcpBVf

Thank you for coming to Vallejo!
Director of Community Development at City of West Sacramento and Past President, APA California Chapter
Just returned from a truly inspiring weekend with the California Planning Roundtable in the magical City of Vallejo, California—and I’m feeling energized by the people, place, and purpose behind this gathering. Our summer meeting kicked off with a walking tour of historic Mare Island, followed by a standout panel discussion, “Forging Ahead: Modern Pioneers of Mare Island’s Economy.” We heard directly from the leaders transforming this once-military base into a hub for craft brewing, advanced manufacturing, higher education, and economic revitalization. The blend of history and innovation was nothing short of remarkable. Special shout out to Mare Island Brewing Co. , especially to its founder and my friend Kent Fortner for hosting and participating on the panel - and to the Mare Island Historical Park Foundation for leading the tour! To our panelists,Newman J. Hoffman - CEO of Touro University California, Rob Howard at Kindred Motorworks, Brian Nagy of The Mare Island Company and the wonderful Erin Hanford Magagna from the City of Vallejo, California for guiding us through your journey on the Island, and "real talk" about the serious challenges you've faced. On Saturday, the conversation shifted to “Bridging the Divide: Rebuilding Trust in Vallejo Government,” with thoughtful insights from Vallejo Mayor Andrea Sorce, Assistant City Manager Nalungo Mwanga-Conley, and Planning and Development Services Director Kristin Pollot, AICP. Sharing your thoughts and experiences were a powerful reminder that public trust is foundational to our work—and that building it requires courage, humility, and honest dialogue. In between the panels and meetings, it was a joy to reconnect with colleagues, reflect on our shared challenges, and be reminded of the impact we as planners and community developers can make—especially when we come together with curiosity and commitment. Huge thanks to our local hosts, our panelists, and everyone who helped make this meeting meaningful. Vallejo, you inspired us and will ALWAYS hold a special place in my heart. 📸 : Bernadette Austin #CaliforniaPlanningRoundtable #LeadershipInPlanning #MareIsland #Vallejo #CivicLeadership #PlannersOfLinkedIn #PublicService #PlaceMatters #CPRMeeting #CommunityDevelopment #CityBuilding #LovetheV #mareislandbrewingcompany #kindredmotorworks #tourouniversity #mareislandco

Big News! National Night Out Date Has Changed for Solano County! Exciting update for our community—Solano County is making a smart move by shifting its National Night Out celebration to the first Tuesday in October! Mark your calendars for October 7th because this change means a cooler, more comfortable evening for everyone. Also, with kids back to school it will conflict less with vacations. In past years, scorching temperatures—often reaching nearly 100 degrees— and summer vacations have put a damper on participation. By adjusting the date, the Solano County Law Enforcement Administrators Association (SCLEAA) hopes to encourage more people to come together, connect, and celebrate our vibrant community without the heat holding us back. While this new date does not align with other counties across Northern California, many communities across the country have made the same switch, recognizing that extreme heat and the conflict with summer vacations can put a damper on the fun. The SCLEAA made this adjustment with that in mind—to ensure maximum participation and a night to remember! So let’s make this year’s National Night Out bigger and better than ever! Join us in Vallejo as we honor our police officers, first responders, and most importantly—each other. Let’s come together to strengthen our community, build relationships, and create lasting memories. The City of Vallejo registration form for National Night Out 2025 is: https://lnkd.in/gwkr33xn See you on October 7th!

The City Continues Enhanced Rodent Abatement The City of Vallejo continues to take decisive action to address rodent activity in the waterfront and downtown areas. Over the past week, City staff have partnered closely with professional pest control experts to implement aggressive abatement measures and early feedback suggests the efforts are making a meaningful impact. “We’re confident that our approach is working and the community will see those benefits,” said Nalungo Conley, Assistant City Manager. “This is a coordinated effort, and we’re committed to keeping the momentum going.” City crews will continue their daily mitigation work, with ongoing monitoring and reporting to ensure progress remains on track. Special recognition goes to the dedicated Public Works teams who have been out every morning tackling this issue head-on. Their hard work is making a visible difference. Community Engagement Encouraged Residents and business owners are invited to share feedback, ask questions, or report concerns. Please reach out to Assistant City Manager Nalungo Conley at nalungo.conley@cityofvallejo.net. Together, we’re working toward a cleaner, safer Vallejo
