As we reflect on 20 years since Hurricane Katrina, we’re grateful for the dedication of the 1,800+ Civil Air Patrol members from 17 wings who stepped up to help. Their teamwork and compassion shone through in over 50,000 volunteer hours—supporting search and rescue, vital transportation, evacuation efforts, and more than 1,000 CAP sorties, according to the U.S. Air Force. Civil Air Patrol adult members and cadets came together to make the Illinois Wing Emergency Services Academy a success. The event at Dacy Airport, which has a grass airstrip, was the perfect spot for hands-on training, helping everyone practice for times when regular metropolitan and suburban airport access might be limited. Our New York Wing's Vanguard Composite Squadron brought some joy to a 14-year-old World War II fan battling terminal bone cancer. Although he couldn't make it to Pearl Harbor, Vanguard members found a way to give him a special thrill at the Mid-Atlantic Air Museum's "Gathering of Warbirds" in Reading, Pennsylvania. It was a truly special day, and we're so grateful for everyone who helped create this lasting memory for him. Cadets from all over Civil Air Patrol—some traveling from as far as Guam and Alaska—came together at Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota, for the North Central Region Cyber Academy. They dove into a wide range of cybersecurity topics, from cyber ethics and virtual machines to advanced networking and real-world security challenges. Our Florida Wings recent Ground Search and Rescue Academy helped 34 cadets earn a total of 67 emergency services qualifications. Our California Wing recently hosted the Aerospace Education STEM Academy. Cadets got hands-on with science, technology, engineering, and math activities, all while learning from fellow Civil Air Patrol cadets and dedicated aerospace education officers.
