Yesterday I attended the very first CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) Early Careers Conference. The day brought early career professionals together and provided a platform to share presentations on flood risk, wastewater, and the environment. The afternoon workshop focussed on opportunities and threats our sector faces on three big themes: the climate and biodiversity crises, the shortage of skills and resources, and public trust and engagement. The discussions had great participation and we look to feed insights directly into a joint article series being developed between CIWEM and Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) - https://lnkd.in/eveJ3gaW. It was also great to hear about John Curtin and Emily Blaney’s presidential theme for 2025/26: ‘Green Roots, Growing Prosperity’. Huge thanks to Kieran Murnane and Peter R. for pulling together such a great conference, and to CIWEM for giving early career professionals the space to be heard. It’s an extraordinary privilege to take on the President role at CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) alongside the brilliant early careers President Emily Blaney. This organisation has been at the heart of my personal and professional development since I joined as a graduate in 1992! I can only thank Hannah Burgess FCIWEM & Peter Rook for such an inspiration year - a hard act to follow. Equally inspirational was spending some time with our early career professionals at their conference today. More on the theme of our presidential year here https://lnkd.in/eg4KvcW7

And we’re off 🚀 I am honoured to begin my term as CIWEM Early Careers President. It’s even more special that the handover took place at the very first Early Careers Conference hosted by WSP. A year ago, I couldn’t have imagined stepping into this role. What I have always known, though, is my passion for the water and environment sector. Over the next year, I’m so excited to celebrate and champion the brilliant work of our members alongside the fantastic John Curtin. Huge thanks to Hannah Burgess FCIWEM and Peter R. for such an inspiring year. We’re building on strong foundations. After a day of fascinating talks from our Early Career Professionals at today's conference, it was time for the CIWEM Presidential handover. It was great to hear from Hannah Burgess FCIWEM and Peter R. about everything they've been up to and what they've achieved over this last year, and what their plans are for taking their 'Ripple Effect' forwards. Then it was time to hand over to the new CIWEM Presidential team: CIWEM President John Curtin and CIWEM Early Careers President Emily Blaney. John and Emily introduced the Early Career Professionals audience to their Presidential Theme of 'Green Roots, Growing Prosperity – why climate and environmental resilience supports the government’s growth agenda', which focuses on the synergy of environmental resilience with economic growth. 🌊 Tomorrow I’ll be speaking at the first CIWEM (The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management) Early Careers Conference 2025, which its been a privilege to organise, and fittingly my last day as Early Careers President. Over the past year I’ve had the privilege of representing early and mid-career professionals, working alongside a brilliant presidential team, and helping to shape mine and Hannah Burgess FCIWEM theme of The Ripple Effect: how the small actions we each take can scale into meaningful change in climate resilience, water management and beyond. I’ll be giving the keynote tomorrow morning, reflecting on my career journey, the role of the presidential team, and some highlights from an incredibly busy year. More importantly, I’m looking forward to hearing from the next wave of water and environmental professionals, who continue to inspire with their energy, ideas and commitment. If you’re attending, please do come and say hello. And if you’re not, I’d encourage you to connect with CIWEM and get involved. Branches, groups, and events like this are some of the best ways to build your network and amplify your impact. https://lnkd.in/eSVut8hH #CIWEM #EarlyCareers #TheRippleEffect #ClimateResilience
