About us

We are Colonna's. Colonna’s Shipyard, Inc. is a diversified industrial company, with multiple divisions and affiliates delivering the highest quality ship repair, machining, and steel fabrication services to both the commercial and government markets. Colonna’s Shipyard, Inc. is located in the historic Berkley section of Norfolk, Virginia and is the oldest continuous family owned and operated private shipyard in the United States. Founded in 1875 by Charles J. Colonna, a 26 year old ship carpenter with limited resources, the early business was limited to pier-side repairs. Within 2 years, Charles had added his first marine railway powered by two horses that had a lift capacity of about 40 tons, and he was off and running. Although over 140 years old, Colonna’s Shipyard continues to maintain its commitment to modernization, making the capital investments necessary for improvements in efficiency and productivity. Today, Colonna’s is a diverse industrial company with extensive capabilities in commercial and government ship repair, machining and large steel fabrication. Colonna’s strength is our employees. We employ the best and the brightest in the shipyard industry and we are proud of all that they do. From welders and ship fitters to government contract specialists, we have the right people in place to make sure the job is completed to the highest standards. Respect~ Pride ~ Truth ~ Family These are our CORE VALUES and the guidelines that make us a leader in our industry. We are pleased and confident in stating that our skilled employees are among the most respected experts in the ship repair industry. Colonna’s Shipyard and our affiliates are pleased to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. EOE/M/F/DISABILITY/VET

  • #ThrowbackThursday: Did you know that Benjamin Colonna, Jr., the third President of Colonna’s Shipyard, was an avid yachtsman and sailor? He began sailing at just 10 years old and entered competitive racing by 15. A Maury High School graduate, Ben went on to begin his apprenticeship at Colonna’s in the Inside Machine Shop. His passion for sailing never slowed, though—at 24, with his friend Ronnie Miller as crew, he won the National Championship Trophy in the Hampton Class. In 1945, he secured his second National Championship and also captured the Governor’s Cup. At one point in his career, Ben achieved an astonishing record of 41 consecutive victories against some of the best sailors in the country. Pictured here, Ben Colonna, Jr. proudly stands with a few of his trophies—symbols of his skill, dedication, and competitive spirit both on and off the water. #Colonnas1875 #RespectPrideTruthFamily #CSICelebrates150YearsOfExcellence #History #HamptonRoads #Sailing #Maritime

🚧 Safety Saturday - Presented by Steel America 🚧 Every Saturday, we’ll spotlight our commitment to safety across Colonna’s Shipyard, Steel America, and Weld America with tips, examples, and team highlights. Rooted in our values of Respect, Pride, Truth, and Family, this series reminds us that safety isn’t just a requirement—it’s a responsibility we all share. 👷 This week’s spotlight: Ricky Julien, Safety Supervisor – Colonna’s Shipyard Ricky has been part of the Colonna’s family for nearly eight years, beginning as a temporary worker in 2017 before stepping into his current leadership role. As Safety Supervisor, Ricky serves as the vital link between regulations like OSHA, NAVSEA, NFPA, and ANSI and our operations teams—ensuring production is completed safely and in compliance with the highest standards. His responsibilities include safety training, industrial sampling, inspections, and supporting our evolving production schedule 💡 Ricky’s safety tip he never skips: “One safety tip that I never skip relates to Pillar #1: Safety is Everyone's job – all the time. Ensuring safety at the jobsite can be done by any and everyone here at Colonna's Shipyard and it is an honor to be a safety contact for information, guidance, assistance to ensure a strong safety culture company wide.” ❤️ His motivation: “My motivation for staying safe and making sure my teammates do the same is simple, Family. We all have a life outside Colonna's gates, somebody or something that is waiting for us to get home. It is my personal wish that everyone that comes to work for Colonna's Shipyard returns to their home the same way, if not, better condition than when they started work that day.” Ricky’s commitment is a powerful reminder of our values —and the importance of looking out for one another every single day. What’s one safety tip you never skip? #SafetySaturday #SteelAmerica #RespectPrideTruthFamily #EveryonesJob #Maritime #Shipyard #SkilledTrades #HamptonRoads

🌺 Hawaiian Shirt Fridays at Steel America 🌺 Hawaiian Shirt Friday has become somewhat of a tradition around Steel America—even beyond just our division. Every week, you can spot team members celebrating the end of the week in their boldest, brightest prints. Recently, we turned up the fun with a Hawaiian Shirt Contest, where some of our finest “vacationers-at-heart” went head-to-head for prizes and bragging rights: 🥇 1st Place – Connor Devlin, Inside Machine Shop Apprentice Connor stole the show with a Hello Kitty Hawaiian shirt, earning the award for most unique style. 🥈 2nd Place – Daniel Erdogan, Engineering Designer Daniel kept it classy with a floral pattern—professional enough for the office, yet festive enough for Friday. 🥉 3rd Place – Nick Horne, Superintendent III Nick channeled his inner Tom Selleck with a classic look. He claimed it brought out his eyes, though his sunglasses kept us guessing. A big thank-you to everyone who joined in on the fun, and to Elizabeth Crutchfield for spearheading the event! We’re looking forward to making this a recurring tradition and seeing even more creativity next time. #SteelAmerica #HawaiianShirtDay #Maritime #Fabrication #Machining #HamptonRoads

  • #ThrowbackThursday: If you knew Mr. C, you knew he loved a good laugh, whether at home or around the yard. His granddaughter, Elizabeth Crutchfield, remembers the “haunted” tales he used to tell about their family home. Complete with the real names of previous owners for extra goosebumps, what felt spooky back then are now cherished family memories. And his pranks didn’t stop at home. Around the shipyard, Mr. C was known for keeping his work family on their toes. Sandra Spriggs, who retired after more than 40 years of continuous service, still visits the yard to catch up and share stories. She recently recalled how Mr. C’s favorite tricks involved a certain fake snake, rat, and spider… all of which are still on site today. #Colonnas1875 #RespectPrideTruthFamily #History #CSICelebrates150YearsOfExcellence #Maritime #HamptonRoads
