CROFTON is seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our team! This hands-on role is responsible for maintaining and repairing company equipment—including lattice boom and hydraulic cranes, winches, compressors, large pumps, boats, and more—both in the shop and out in the field. The ideal candidate will have experience with mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems, along with the ability to troubleshoot, mobilize/demobilize cranes, and complete on-site repairs. Preferred candidates will have 5+ years of heavy equipment experience, their own tools, a valid driver’s license, and a TWIC card. #TBT to the early 1940's, when Juan Crofton's future took an unexpected turn. He had just graduated high school and earned a football scholarship to Duke. But after the attack on Pearl Harbor, everything changed. He tried to stay in school through the ROTC program, but a failed eye exam closed that door. Not one to mope, Juan boarded a Greyhound bus and set out for a job at Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS). He began in shipwright work, then switched to rigging. That's where he first saw a person emerge from the water in a commercial diving suit and something clicked. He knew that was what he wanted to do. He soon found himself working with the NNS chief diver, who helped him learn the basics of diving. Pictured here: Juan’s original diving tag from his days at Newport News Shipyard & Dry Dock.

Our Quarterly Safety Committee Meeting brings representatives from every department together to promote transparency, open dialogue, and most importantly, the safety of our people and resources. Led by our Safety Director, the meeting covers key safety metrics, updates on policies and procedures, and gives team members a chance to raise questions and share feedback. One standout takeaway this quarter: while safety surveillances increased by 52% from Q1 to Q2, non-conformances dropped by 30%, so even though the team was looking more closely and more often, we found fewer problems.
