🔵 𝘊𝘰𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘤𝘰𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘮 𝘰𝘳 𝘢𝘲𝘶𝘢𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦. 🔵 Many nutrients responsible for eutrophication come from the land — especially agriculture. 📍 In earlier work, CSIC developed #LUSI (Land Uses Simplified Index) — essentially a map-based tool to estimate land-based pressures on coastal waters using land use/land cover #data. It was first applied along the Catalan coast. 🚀 Building on that, #ENHANCE_eu will introduce D-LUSI (Dynamic Land Uses Simplified Index) — an innovation that uses #Copernicus satellite data to track land-use pressures dynamically over time. 🛰️ By combining Earth Observation data with coastal morphology, salinity, and in situ water quality indicators, D-LUSI gives a clearer, real-time picture of how land-based activities affect marine ecosystems. 🔬 It will be tested in our two case studies: 🇪🇸 The Ebro Delta, where rice farming contributes to nutrient runoff during regular agricultural cycles; 🇬🇷 The Pagasitikos Gulf, where Storm Daniel flushed pollutants from inland agriculture and livestock directly into the sea. 📡 These conditions serve as prime scenarios for testing D-LUSI’s capacity to track land-sea #pollution dynamics under both regular agricultural pressure and extreme weather events. D-LUSI will help us better understand and manage land-sea interactions — a key step in applying the #OneHealth approach to coastal resilience. It also taps into something just as powerful: citizens. 🇪🇺 To meet the ambitions of the European #GreenDeal, the European Commission (EC) actively highlights the value of citizen science in shaping environmental policies. Since the 2018 Joint Research Center Study, and through regular updates to its #citizenscience inventory, the EC has embedded this approach into environmental governance. In #ENHANCE_eu, citizen science means: 🔹 Integrating observations from platforms like the #MINKA Citizen Science observatory to monitor biodiversity 🔹 Aligning with EU networks such as ECSA - European Citizen Science Association and ENFORCE_EU to foster collaboration 🔹 Using participatory methods to gather and validate coastal environmental #data 🔹 Ensuring that local #communities aren’t just consulted—they’re co-creators of sustainable coastal management tools 🌊 Our pilot areas on the #CatalanCoast, Spain 🇪🇸 and in the #PagasitikosGulf, Greece 🇬🇷 will function as living labs, showcasing how public engagement can directly shape both science and policy. 🤝 Citizen science isn’t just data collection.
