🐝ESA Biologist, Dr. Dillon Travis, has been creating some real buzz with his recently published manuscript on the impact non-native honey bees (Apis mellifera) have on native pollinator species in San Diego. The study shows that although there are more than 700 different bee species in San Diego County, honey bees can account for about 90 to 99 percent of all pollinators visiting common native plant species, consuming the majority of pollen available each day. Native populations could be up to an estimated 50 times larger if they had the resources available to them that are currently being taken by non-native honey bees! With a few species of California pollinators being candidates for the state endangered species list, this work is more relevant to our industry than ever.
