⚠️ 50% US steel tariffs: adding fuel to the EU steel crisis – what’s the way out? 🇺🇸 The US tariffs on steel remain at 50%, including on European steel. 🇪🇺🇺🇸 EU-U.S. deal leaves steel in limbo ⚙️⏳ The joint EU-U.S. statement confirmed July’s deal between Presidents Donald Trump and Ursula von der Leyen: ➡️ 15% U.S. tariffs on most EU products ➡️ 50% tariffs maintained on EU steel, aluminium and their derivatives ➡️ An intention to “consider” cooperation on tariff-rate quotas (TRQs) and ring-fencing against global steel and aluminium overcapacity. While Europe's steel industry clearly acknowledges the efforts made by the President of the European Commission and Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič, for the sector the uncertainty remains high: 🔴 Close to 4 million tonnes of EU steel exports to the U.S. still face prohibitive 50% tariffs with the risk they may disappear altogether 🔴 No deadline set for restoring preferential access and vague engagement on the rest 🔴 A 15% tariff on most other products means an additional burden for EU steel, as many EU exports are steel intensive, such as machinery and cars. 💬 EUROFER Director General Axel Eggert said: "Ring-fencing against global steel overcapacity means close alignment of the EU's and the U.S.' import regimes. 🌍Global overcapacity is no longer just about China. It’s gone global, and Europe is wide open. By 2027, steel overcapacity will hit 721 million tonnes – four-five times the EU’s annual production. As other regions build excess capacity and close their borders, cheap, high-emission steel is flooding into the EU. 📉 EU production is collapsing 🏭 EU plants are closing 👷 EU jobs are disappearing Europe urgently needs a new, highly effective trade measure that reflects today’s global market crisis and preserves our clean, competitive steel industry. #SaveEUSteel 🏭👩🏭
