My Sabbatical Journey .....
At our workplace "Evolent", we often talk about balance, well-being, and growth. One of the most beautiful ways this is brought to life is through our Sabbatical Leave Policy. After completing five years in the organization, employees are eligible for a 20-day paid sabbatical—a time to pause, reflect, explore, or simply rejuvenate.
I recently availed this wonderful benefit and chose to spend it exploring Australia, a land of breathtaking coastlines, lush national parks, and warm, welcoming people. With my brother based in Melbourne, the journey began there—and soon expanded to Brisbane, Gold Coast, and Sydney.
From the vibrant city life of Melbourne to the iconic Great Ocean Road, every stop brought new awe and wonder. I walked the white sands of Surfer’s Paradise, soaked in views from Teddy’s Lookout, stood humbled at the 12 Apostles, and caught the ocean breeze at Altona Beach. We explored majestic points like Cape Otway Lighthouse, strolled the Maribyrnong River Walk, and experienced city gems like Victoria Library and Flinders Street Station.
In Sydney, the Opera House and Bondi Beach were obvious highlights, but it was the quiet reflection time during our nature walks—through mountains, gardens, and city trails—that left a deeper impression. A visit to the Blue Mountains, Mount Coot-tha, and parks where koalas and kangaroos roamed brought us closer to nature than ever before.
Our family - my husband, daughter, mother, and brother’s family - shared this journey together, making it not just a vacation but a deeply personal, bonding experience.
Beyond the sightseeing and food adventures (yes, we indulged in everything from Malaysian and Vietnamese to artisanal croissants at Lune!), this time off gave me space for self-reflection. I had the chance to read the compelling memoir "Educated" by Tara Westover, an inspiring story that left me thinking deeply about resilience and the power of learning. I walked miles through nature, sometimes alone, sometimes with my daughter, and returned each day feeling lighter, more grounded, and more alive.
In our daily routines, we often forget to pause and enjoy precious moments with our family, read a good book, sip coffee calmly, admire nature, and be grateful for what we have. However, when we take time for self-reflection, we become better listeners, understand our loved ones more deeply, disconnect from gadgets, appreciate the beauty around us, and embrace who we are and what we have.
I'm deeply thankful to my organization Evolent and my managers Manish and Shawn for making this possible. Not many workplaces offer such an empowering benefit, and I strongly encourage my colleagues to take full advantage of it. Whether you travel, learn, volunteer, or just rest, it’s your time to reconnect with yourself.
I also want to extend my gratitude to Mayura and Rasika for encouraging me to share this experience.
