Excel proves that children’s ability to succeed in high school, college, and beyond is not determined by zip code.

About us

Excel Academy was founded in 2003 with the mission to provide a high-quality education to students in East Boston and Chelsea Massachusetts, communities that are predominantly low-income and Latinx and historically have faced significant social and educational barriers. Our success in Massachusetts is proof that the opportunity gap can be closed. At Excel Academy Charter Schools, we believe that when a student has the support and tools to pursue a productive post-secondary pathway aligned to their personal identity and values, it can fundamentally change their life trajectory. Over the years, we have grown from one middle school to a network of four schools with 1,400 students in grades 5 to 12. In the fall of 2022 we will welcome a founding class of 5th graders to help us launch Excel Academy Rhode Island. By 2032, Excel Rhode Island will run 4 schools serving over 2,100 students from Providence, Central Falls, and North Providence. We present our students with educational experiences that allow them to grow and discover their best selves so that when they leave our halls, they can successfully navigate all of the post-secondary options available to them. At Excel Academy we learn from our students, families, and staff and make improvements. We have increasingly adapted to provide a holistic education that values our community as collaborators in the learning process, social-emotional support, equity for diverse learners, and fosters identity development. We prioritize an approach that is both rigorous and inclusive. Our team of passionate, intelligent, driven, and loving staff are at the core of the work we do. Growth Happens Here.

  • At Excel, community comes full circle. 💙✨ We’re proud that 11% of our staff are Excel alumni who chose to return and grow the same supportive, inspiring environment they once experienced as students. They lead in roles as lead teachers, a Dean of Culture, Director of Talent, Director of Student Recruitment, Teacher Fellow, and more. That’s the power of living out our commitment to community — generation after generation.

  • “I wanted to work at a school where students were learning grade level content and could be successful in AP classes. I chose to work with younger students because the earlier you can teach students the skills they need to know to be set up to access grade level content, the better.” - Mr. Cabral, Middle School Social Studies teacher at XLC

  • We are excited to welcome new teachers who are passionate about learning and growth, both for students and their own careers. Listen to some of our new teachers (and some Excel alums!) share why they chose to join our community: the chance to contribute to a culture built on continuous learning, collaboration, and professional development all in service of our students and community.

  • Happy Summit! We officially kicked off the 2025-26 school year today. We call it Summit - it’s our time to gather our whole community to welcome new members, celebrate achievements, and ground ourselves in our mission as we pivot to focus on the year ahead. It’s a special day for Excel, one that allows every member of our staff to personally and professionally connect to the why we love this work, what is going well and what needs to grow, and how we win on our goals this year, all in service of our students and families.💙💛

  • New Staff Orientation at Excel is an opportunity for practice, relationship building, and preparing for a strong start to the school year!

  • Excel Academy is deeply disappointed by the City Council’s vote against our proposed lease of the Carl G. Lauro building, catalyzed by President Miller’s sudden reversal last night of her prior public support for the agreement. Providence constituents submitted 384 statements of support to the City Council, compared to just 17 in opposition, a ratio of 22 to 1. This vote sends a troubling message: family voices can be disregarded for political expediency. Over 200 families stood shoulder-to-shoulder in the Council Chambers, filling every seat and overflowing the balcony. In contrast, only a few dozen opponents attended. For all the talk tonight of “equity” and “access,” the Council meeting itself was inaccessible to non-English speakers, who made up the majority of families in attendance. We are especially grateful to Councilor Espinal for engaging with families in their native language at the May 12, 2025 Ordinance Committee meeting. We urge city leaders to remember their responsibility to all Providence families, not just the loudest or most politically connected, and to lead with the same courage and transparency that our community has modeled throughout this process.
