Hurricane Katrina’s devastation along the Gulf Coast 20 years ago called on a vast network of skilled professionals to restore storm protections and reduce future risks. Before they joined Freese and Nichols, six of our water resources engineers were immersed in the intense, exhausting work of helping #Louisiana recover — both in the immediate aftermath and for many years. They gained invaluable experience, and they continue to apply that expertise to help build resilient communities and coasts. Read about their #Katrina memories and how that experience influences their work today: https://bit.ly/461dQJC

Reflecting our shared commitment to long-term resilience, this project aligns with Freese and Nichols' philosophy of protecting coastlines through nature-based solutions, strategic partnerships and innovative design. From Texas to Florida to Louisiana, we’re assisting our clients in preserving ecosystems, safeguarding infrastructure and strengthening coastlines for future generations.
Exciting news from Louisiana! Freese and Nichols has officially broken ground on our first coastal restoration project in the state. In partnership with Jefferson Parish Government, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and Jefferson Parish Schools, we’re helping restore and protect one of Louisiana’s most valuable natural assets. The Upper Barataria Terracing Project is constructing 25,000 linear feet of marsh terraces and restoring 450 acres of salt marsh. This effort is part of the multiple lines of defense strategy for coastal Louisiana—reducing erosion, buffering storm impacts, and bringing back critical habitat that supports fisheries, waterfowl, and countless ecological benefits. And we’re just getting started—Phase II is coming soon! #CoastalRestoration #Louisiana #Resiliency #Sustainability #FreeseAndNichols

Looking to revitalize its downtown, the City of Stephenville, Texas faced a challenge nearby: Long Street's historic brick pavement was in disrepair and its 100-year-old culvert was deteriorating. By restoring the early 20th-century bricks and enhancing accessibility with new sidewalks, curb ramps and a new, custom-built culvert, the City transformed the aging roadway into a safer, more walkable community hub. As students across our communities return to their classrooms, our teams in Houston, Pearland, Lafayette and New Orleans have helped nonprofits and community centers make sure families in need have full pantries. Before heading back to their own schools, our Houston summer interns took charge of packing snack bags for the donations, giving back in Freese and Nichols' “Serve Always” style.

From avoiding scope creep in lift station rehab to applying the Baldrige Framework for organizational excellence, our experts are sharing strategies that will help utilities strengthen performance, manage costs and extend infrastructure life. At this year’s Rocky Mountain Water Conference, the annual joint conference of RMWEA and Rocky Mountain Section American Water Works Association (RMSAWWA), we’ll highlight practical approaches in hydraulic modeling, surge analysis and proactive coating rehabilitation — equipping communities with tools to improve reliability and resilience. Join the conversation in Keystone, CO, August 25–27, and see how we’re helping water systems build smarter, safer and more sustainable solutions.
