Last week, we hosted a Shadow Day for five students attending Mount Saint Joseph (MSJ) High School, joined by MSJ Chemistry Teacher and Internship Coordinator, Beth Czyryca. The five students are aspiring scientists and engineers who wanted to experience a “day-in-the-life” of an Applications Scientist at GERSTEL, Inc. Megan Harper-Kerr provided an overview of sample extraction techniques, GC-MS, software, and Sensory Directed Analysis. The students toured GERSTEL’s laboratories and analyzed their very own sample, flavored tortilla chips, using an advanced dynamic headspace technique combined with GC-MS.
