About us

Habitat for Humanity is a movement of people in your local area and around the world, working together to build more prosperous and vibrant communities by making sure everyone has a safe, affordable place to call home. Since our founding in 1976 as a Christian organization, together we have helped more than 62 million people in countries around the world build their futures on their own terms through access to decent housing. We’ve done that by working alongside people of all walks of life to build, repair and finance their homes, by innovating new ways of building and financing, and by advocating for policies that make constructing and accessing housing easier for everyone. Together, we build homes, communities and hope. To learn more, visit habitat.org.

20 years ago today, Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, displacing more than a million people and destroying countless homes and communities. I'll never forget walking through the affected areas and meeting families who faced unimaginable loss but remained resilient and the thousands of volunteers who stood ready to rebuild their homes, communities and hope alongside them. Two decades later, the lessons of Hurricane Katrina stay with me; housing is more than a roof over one's head. It's the foundation of strength, stability and a better future. When the public, private and nonprofit sectors come together, we can create long-lasting, sustainable housing solutions that still stand in the wake of disasters. I'm grateful for the families, volunteers and partners that turned tragedy into a story of resilience, and who continue the work of building a world where everyone has a safe, decent place to call home. Together, we build back better and stronger.

  • Access to safe and reliable water, sanitation and hygiene — called WASH — is an integral component of adequate housing. Our comprehensive, community-led WASH strategy not only helps thousands of families improve their lives and livelihoods, but our work also serves to advance health outcomes, environmental conservation, women’s empowerment, economic growth and education.  In the post below, learn about Habitat for Humanity Fiji's recently completed WASH facilities at the Namulomulo Village After-School Learning Centre.

They provide girls and women with privacy and security, create inclusive spaces for everyone, and allow students to focus on learning without interruption. With the support of KOICA Fiji Office and #globalvillage volunteers, Habitat Fiji has built two new WASH facilities for over 40 children and university students who have been using the after-school learning centre in Namulomulo Village. Through this learning centre the village has achieved a zero-dropout rate among its students, and with the new facilities in place, we look forward to even greater academic success and a safer, more supportive learning environment for all. The WASH facilities was opened last week with community members and the global village volunteers. #SDG11 #SDG6 #namulomulovillage

  • Many schools have been incorporating hands-on Habitat for Humanity service projects into student orientations this year and we love to see it! For many, this is their first exposure to our work and our mission, but we know a number of them will be hooked and looking for more ways to get involved. • Currently, the more than 1 billion people around the world living in informal settlements, such as slums or favelas, are not treated as equals. 🚰 A home without access to clean water means families are at risk of life-threatening diseases. 📃 A home without land rights means families live in fear of eviction with their futures on hold. 🚧 A poorly built home in a disaster-prone area means families are more vulnerable to weather-related damage. 🗣️ A home where civic participation is limited means families struggle to have their voices heard. 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗿, 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁. It will take the power of communities coupled with policy change to ensure access to adequate housing for all. Together, with partners, governments and communities, our #HomeEquals global advocacy capaign can create lasting change so that people living in informal settlements have safe and secure homes. • Acknowledging the ever-widening gap between personal income and the cost of housing in the region, Pensacola Habitat for Humanity established the Northwest Florida Community Land Trust as a shared equity homeownership model. In this Community Land Trust model, homeowners agree to a resale formula that ensures the home remains affordable for the next qualified buyer, preserving access to homeownership in perpetuity.
