Our #HawthorneLaneWoman is Erika Alexander, former Chief Global Officer of Global Operations at Marriott International. Erika is a Virginia native, having received her bachelor's from the University of Virginia and her master's from George Mason University. With initial plans to pursue law school, Erika's career course shifted after connecting with a Marriott contact at a UVA alumni event. Over the next 35 years, she advanced through many divisions and ranks, learning the ins and outs of Marriott and ultimately becoming the Chief Global Officer of Global Operations. She acted as a sponge, embracing the reality that, when in hospitality, people are at the core of your business and every day looks different. Erika commented in an interview with Morgan Gibson Kanner, “As a leader, I always wanted to be worthy of the mom who stood at the bus stop in the rain to get her kids to school and to come to the hotel to work in housekeeping for us. They deserved the best from us in exchange.” Erika used her tenure and experience to cultivate a team that understood its purpose and mission at their core, all while delivering an undisputed quality experience. Erika was an advocate for creating diverse teams and believes that this drives success. Erika is actively involved as a Board Member of La-Z-Boy Incorporated and CollegeTracks and has formerly been involved in Leadership Atlanta, the Atlanta Children’s Shelter, The Ron Clark Academy, and the executive committee for the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. Erika has received numerous recognitions throughout her career, having been named an International Women’s Forum Leadership Foundation Fellow, recognized by the Atlanta Business League as one of the Top 100 Influential Women in Atlanta, and being a recipient of Marriott’s Diversity and Inclusion Trailblazer Award.
