The award is part of the newly established Martin Center for Mentorship in Communication, which is on a mission to inspire and develop the future generation of leaders and mentors among today’s communication students. Thank you to Tom Martin and the College of Charleston!

The Martin Center for Mentorship at the College of Charleston is so proud to celebrate the recipient of our inaugural Distinguished Mentor Award, Bill Heyman, founder and CEO of Heyman Associates. All of us who are friends and admirers of Bill know that he exemplifies what an outstanding mentor should be. He is empathetic, loyal, and persistent in helping so many of us grow and develop, not just as professionals, but as people. We look forward to celebrating his achievement on March 29 at the College of Charleston.

  • Another great year in the books. 2025 is sure to have a lot in store!

This year has been both dynamic and rewarding for Heyman Associates – and for me personally. In my first year as CEO we navigated significant shifts in the political, economic, and media landscapes, all of which have reshaped the way organizations think about messaging and leadership. Adapting to these changes and partnering with our incredible clients to think about the impact and opportunity for the functions of communications, corporate affairs and marketing–– has been a centerpiece of our work this year, and we’ve leaned into the challenge with intention: Network Listening and Engagement: relationships are at the heart of what we do. Our team is consistently present in the market. We are involved in industry groups, facilitate our own small group discussions and on behalf of our clients – we prioritize meaningful dialogue to understand how comms, corporate affairs and marketing leaders are viewing and handling challenges in front of them. Because we are always in the market, we can authentically advise our clients and talent when it comes to big decisions. Staying Informed with Data: we analyzed trends within our own search work and materials to better anticipate what lies ahead for organizations and leaders. This has helped to validate our instincts and observations in the market, but also showed us that some changes are happening more abruptly than others. Understanding the Role Evolution: the rise of the Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, the transformative impact of AI, and other shifts reflect how companies are restructuring to stay ahead in a fragmented and fast-paced environment. We anticipate that next year will provide even clearer insights into which leadership and organizational changes are here to stay. To the clients and candidates, we had the privilege to work with this year, thank you for trusting us. Thank you to the Heyman Associates team for being on this ride with me and supporting not only our clients but me through a big year of firsts. Building meaningful relationships and seeing the transformation great leadership brings to organizations is why we do what we do. 2025 will undoubtedly bring more change, but we are ready and committed to meet it with the same focus and curiosity that defined 2024.

  • Thanks to IABC for having our CEO, Jessamyn Katz as a guest on the latest episode of #PodCatalyst to discuss everything from hiring trends to the evolving skillsets required of communicators, and so much more. One takeaway? "You can't lose sight of the fundamental."

  • 🌟 In case you missed it: Last week, we released a report on how evolving language in job descriptions offers valuable insights into the growing demands placed on senior communicators.   A big thank you to key practitioners who shared their observations:   Sarah Knakmuhs: “The skillset required of senior communications professionals has evolved over time. Expectations are higher when it comes to general business acumen. Whether the expertise sought is in the financial, reputational, marketing, operations, strategy, or other realm, fluency for participation in executive leadership conversations is needed both to earn a seat at the table and to ensure your advice is heard.”   Cristal Downing: “This profession has changed significantly over the past 25 years. Along the way, our roles have evolved, along with the words and phrases we use to describe who we are and what we do. However, regardless of the title associated, I believe communications and public affairs, when done right, involves a special blend of art and science, uniting creativity with statistics. Today’s business leaders have access to more data, information and insights than ever before. When we operate with excellence, we can provide our organizations with strategic, creative, effective and impactful counsel to elevate any brand, pursue every opportunity and tackle any challenge.” Read more here!

  • The demands on senior communications professionals have been on the rise. We recently audited over 150 job descriptions to see if the vernacular over time lines up with the shifting responsibilities and priorities in the function. The takeaway? The skillset required has evolved and subtle changes are becoming more permanent shifts. Well said by Jessamyn Katz "Senior communications leaders are gaining a broader responsibility and representation, often helping to determine and shape strategy and initiatives at the corporate level rather than being responsible only for communications during implementation."   Read more from Axios and Eleanor Hawkins on how communicators are redefining their roles. The full report can also be downloaded on our homepage. https://lnkd.in/egMNcPTM

  • Great insights from Eleanor Hawkins and POV from Jessamyn Katz!
