  • BIPOC mental health myth-busting July is Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. In the spirit of Bebe Moore Campbell, let's bring awareness to and bust some myths that exist in BIPOC communities about mental Health support. “What happens in the family should stay in the family” Family is important to many. Depending on your preferences or how you grew up, you might believe that sharing challenges going on within the family is inappropriate. You may have been taught that family concerns should stay “behind closed doors” or that you shouldn’t “air your dirty laundry in public.” Some may also have been taught that seeking mental health care would bring shame to their family. However, sharing your feelings and experiences with friends or professionals you trust can be extremely valuable to you and your family. You might learn healthy coping or communication skills that would benefit you, but would also positively impact your family dynamic. Because we are all interconnected, anything you do to take care of yourself naturally helps take care of your family. https://lnkd.in/d7byzNir

  • BIPOC mental health myth-busting July is Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. In the spirit of Bebe Moore Campbell, let's bring awareness to and bust some myths that exist in BIPOC communities about mental Health support. “If you’re struggling, you aren’t praying enough” Struggling with your mental health does not mean that you are being spiritually tested or punished for your sins. We all need support with our mental health sometimes, and seeking out help is an act of humility. Spiritual support can come in many forms, such as the people and resources that are put in your path to help you heal. Working with a mental health professional can supplement other sources of spiritual or emotional support. Many therapists are also spiritually-minded. You may be able to find a therapist who belongs to the same religious denomination as you. Finding someone who recognizes the importance of faith in your life can make your healing experience more personal and effective. https://vist.ly/3zksm

  • Mayor Bowser Encourages Residents to Stay Cool During Prolonged Period of Extreme Heat Residents and Visitors Urged to Exercise Caution, Avoid Overheating, and Check on Vulnerable Neighbors and Unsheltered Residents    (WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser is encouraging residents and visitors to take precautions to ensure they stay safe and cool ahead of expected high temperatures that will last through this weekend and into next week. Due to anticipated high temperatures and humidity levels, Mayor Bowser has activated an Extreme Heat Alert for Friday, July 25 through Wednesday, July 30, with the possibility of an extension or revision should the forecast change. The National Weather Service is forecasting daily high temperatures that could reach 99 degrees. When combined with high humidity levels, the heat index is expected to be as high as 109 degrees at times. Overnight temperatures are expected to drop into the high 70s, but due to humidity, the heat index could reach as high as 95 degrees overnight.    The Bowser Administration urges residents to take precautions during the extreme heat. That includes staying indoors when possible, remaining hydrated, checking on seniors and other vulnerable neighbors, and calling the shelter hotline at 202-399-7093 or 311 for unsheltered residents in need of free, accessible transportation to a low-barrier shelter or day center. The District will also deploy cooling buses to assist unsheltered residents in need of immediate relief from the heat. Read the full press release here: https://lnkd.in/eKyx74WH
