"In the evolving story of privacy in Canada, few public servants shaped the field's early direction as decisively as [Jennifer] Stoddart. Appointed privacy commissioner of Canada in December 2003 and reappointed in 2010, she steered the office through a formative decade when the boundaries of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act were first being tested — at home, online and across borders." IAPP's Kris Klein continues his series of short profiles to spotlight notable Canadian leaders who have shaped privacy, data protection, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence in this week's "Notes from the IAPP Canada: Stoddart shaped Canada's privacy evolution:" https://bit.ly/47WEZA5

"It is well established that the digital risk domains have multiplied, that their intersectionality triggers new and challenging questions every week — the Commission admits so itself. It is also apparent that the Commission is increasingly held accountable to Mario Draghi's recommendations for EU competitiveness issued last year." Learn more about this in this week's "A view from Brussels: The balancing act of simplifying the EU digital rulebook", by IAPP's Isabelle Roccia (CIPP/E): https://bit.ly/46jYZda

"One of the most challenging aspects of being a privacy professional in China is managing operations when enforcement actions reveal new compliance expectations. The criteria for implementing China-specific compliance mechanisms diverge significantly from those governing global data processing practices; the Dior case provides an excellent example." "Across the privacy audience, the initial narratives around AI came from a position of conservatism, risk aversion and the need for sensible and responsible policymaking to establish effective guardrails and guidelines to allow for trustworthy use and take up. This narrative seems to have flipped over the past six months to now focus more on reducing regulatory barriers in favor of productivity and economic outcomes — with a much higher risk tolerance driving the conversations." Catch up with IAPP's Adam Ford as he recounts IAPP activities in Seoul, South Korea recently, and new guidelines for implementing Australia's social media age restriction law, in this week's "Notes from the Asia-Pacific region: Regulators address AI's impact, Australia's social media age restriction guidelines." https://bit.ly/46GFoW5

"While large-scale quantum computers capable of breaking existing public-key cryptosystems remain hypothetical, the National Institutes of Standards and Technology has noted that some experts expect such devices within the next decade, and Europol‑led advisory groups point to a credible 10 to 15-year timeline for post‑quantum risks. For privacy professionals, these warnings signal that crucial compliance functions — proving consent, preserving data integrity, demonstrating lawful processing — must remain viable even after cryptography changes." With attribution to Simon McDougall and Pamela Snively #AIGGNA25 feels like the AI governance community is starting to coalesce. There is no better temperature test than talking to the people doing the work directly. The questions to panelists and dialogue amongst participants have been my favourite part of the last few days. Understanding what the key challenges in the community are and who has solutions has been great to listen to. I want to do posts just about the #AIGovernance and Health care workshop the #AIAuditing panel I participated in, but for now. These are some of my observations from this week: ✅ everyone is leveling up real fast - maturity of knowledge amongst those working on AI governance has increased rapidly ✅ leaning on pre-existing practices in data governance, cybersecurity, and privacy is useful, however, piggybacking on these existing processes does require thoughtful augmenting and streamlining ✅streamlining these processes likely requires translation and problem-solving amongst all stakeholders involved due to the integration of process- based legal- driven governance and tech/ data governance ✅ still a lack of consistency on ownership and titles - BUT, a lack of consistency is not stopping companies from choosing a process/ ownership - so that’s something ✅ there are many emerging governance tools being codified like contracts between developers and deployers (ie negotion on ownership of where liability exists), intake assessments, risk assessments, maturity assessments, etc are clearly in use ✅ both open source and proprietary AI governance tools are gaining adoption depending on risk, size of company, and internal expertise ✅ while AI governance professionals are gaining literacy, they recognize a significant bottleneck are their colleagues who also need to have a higher degree of AI literacy to help be part of the solution ✅ in general, risks and risk identification is better understood For future: 🧰 CONTEXT MATTERS - yes I’m a broken record - but in order to satisfy the growing appetite for how to apply best practices getting into specific use cases will be useful 🧰 standards, standards, standards - this doesn’t need to be limited to the formal process - sharing of evolving best practices and documenting them will be useful for people to build from 🧰 aligned with above comment on integrating process and technical governance - seeing more discussions/ articles/ reports with people coming from these different teams walking through their shared experience would be useful Huge thanks to all participants, speakers, and the incredibly hard working IAPP for making this happen. What do you do when the IAPP is in Boston for an AI conference? Well, dressing up in traditional garb and leading a tour of the freedom trail was the first and obvious choice for myself and my fellow co-chairs! Thank you to the 20 people crazy enough to join us for a 7am walk, and thank you to my co-chairs Jennifer Tierney, Alexandria (Lexi) Lutz, Landon L. McKinney and Nina Sprenger - CIPP/E for their absolute commitment to the bit!!! I enjoyed my hour playing the sarcastic English king.
