Last week, the Alfond Center teamed up with the State of Maine Department of Corrections and York County Community College to deliver a Culinary Bootcamp at the Southern Maine Women's Re-entry Center - and the kitchen was full of purpose. Led by Chef Charles Galemmo and organized by Colleen Coffey M.S.E.d., the training gave residents hands-on culinary experience and skills that translate directly into industry jobs - knife skills, food safety, teamwork, time management - all essential in Maine's growing hospitality industry. For women returning to their communities, programs like this are more about learning to cook. They're about dignity, opportunity, and a future. Culinary and hospitality jobs offer clear pathways for advancement, creativity, and a career growth. Partnerships like these demonstrate what's possible when education, workforce, and reentry intersect. #WorkforceDevelopment #CulinaryTraining #ShortTermWorkforceTraining #CommunityCollege #HospitalityCareers #SkillsThatMatter #PartnershipsInAction #MaineWorkforce

In a new Q&A with Mainebiz, our Chief Workforce Development Officer Dan Belyea shares how we're working with the construction industry to provide fast, flexible, and employer-driven training programs. Through the Harold Alfond Center for the Advancement of Maine's Workforce, we're investing $8.3 million this year to train 6,700 Mainers for high-demand jobs - including construction institutes, welding, CDL, HVAC, heavy equipment, and more. These short-term programs are often free and offered statewide through our seven colleges. But we're not doing it alone. We're working with industry associations, employers, and educations partners to strengthen the talent pipeline and design training that works - for students and businesses alike. If you're a jobseeker or employer, now is the time to explore how Maine's community colleges can help build your workforce. I’m very grateful to share that I've been afforded the opportunity to serve as the Director of Employee Development at the Maine Community College System! I look forward to continuing to find new ways to support the incredible employees, within the system, with their personal and professional development. This has been a very exciting month for me professionally, as I also became the President of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Board of Directors. The USCAA has held a special place in my heart for the last 17 years and the opportunity to serve in this capacity, supporting small college athletics, is truly fulfilling and rewarding. I look forward to the continued growth these opportunities will afford me and am grateful for all of the folks who have put their belief in me.
