Why do we keep optimizing for signals that don’t correlate to revenue? Because it’s what the old ABM playbook told us to do. But the newest research by Vector 👻 and UserGems 💎 shows it’s not working: (link in comments) ~ Marketers rated their confidence in “right person, right time” targeting at just 5.7/10. ~ Only 13.8% believe they’re actually reaching most in-market buyers. ~ 61% admit they are not achieving desired results. We continue to rely on static inputs such as firmographics (77%) and 'intent' activity (76%), while underutilizing timing-rich signals, including job changes (30%) and off-site research intent (26%). The result? We’re chasing ghosts... signals that appear alive in a dashboard but vanish when sales teams reach out. And the fact that people aren't searching as they did in 2024 hasn't been incorporated into our new playbook. YET! That’s why I’ve changed how I approach ABM. Here’s what I'm doing now: 1. Focus on signals that correlate to closed-won deals (1st and 2nd party intent, champion job changes, revived opps, ICP hires). 2. Track and automate plays around movement, not just engagement. 3. Stop treating every “signal” as equal, or relying on outdated algorithms. Less chasing ghosts.
