How can hospitals turn messy medical records into tools for better cancer care? MUSC Hollings Cancer Center researcher Dr. Jihad Obeid and his team built a lightweight NLP model that reads clinical notes and accurately identifies primary cancer types in patients with brain metastases, something ICD codes often miss. This method: — Has 90%+ accuracy — Has no need for large datasets — Works with standard clinical notes — Is scalable for smaller health systems This approach bridges AI and oncology, making it easier to group patients for trials and tailor treatment plans without adding to clinical workload. Congratulations to Samicca Berry and the Mid-Carolinas Transplant Program at MUSC Lancaster, recipients of the MUSC Employee Initiatives Grant for the second consecutive year. The $2,500 award supports their Meal Assistance Program, helping kidney transplant patients and caregivers access healthy meals during critical recovery time. “Helping transplant patients and their families focus on recovery and the gift of a lifesaving organ rather than financial challenges, has truly made a positive impact on their health and healing,” says Samicca Berry, Transplant Social Worker. Since 2022, the team has completed 300 kidney transplants. This funding helps remove barriers to care so patients and families can focus on healing. #MUSCLancaster #ChangingWhatsPossible

How do you deliver effective pain relief to children with broken femurs—while minimizing systemic medications? A new study co-led by Dr. Matthew Moake at Medical University of South Carolina and UMass Chan Medical School found that ultrasound-guided nerve blocks were significantly more effective than traditional approaches. Children experienced faster pain reduction and required 73% fewer oral morphine equivalents. The research included 12 emergency departments across the U.S. and Australia and is now the largest study of its kind focused on pediatric nerve blocks in the ED setting. “The nerve block lets us really decrease the use of systemic medications and their side effects… It gives you more customized care,” said Moake. Driven by real-time imaging, thoughtful research and better outcomes, we're proud to be changing what's possible in pediatric care. #ChangingWhatsPossible

“As many as 1 in 12 pregnancies are affected by hypertensive disorders of pregnancy like preeclampsia.” With support from MUSC’s Employee Initiative Grant, Amanda Pearsall, RN-SANE, is launching Blue Bands Save Lives, a postpartum safety project designed to alert ED and EMS providers when a patient is at risk. “I will work with our OB, ED and EMS providers to give our postpartum moms the best care possible in Lancaster and Chester.” The initiative also includes BP monitors, educational resources, and a rare bridge between Amanda’s two roles: “It just so happens that it brings both of my departments that I work in together now. I work MUSC Chester ED full time now, and MUSC Lancaster part time.” Thanks for all you do, Amanda! #BlueBandsSaveLives #MaternalHealth #MUSCLancaster #MUSCChester #ChangingWhatsPossible
