  • It’s not rare for people to find things on Facebook. A great deal on Marketplace, maybe a new restaurant or an old friend. North Dakota resident Cortney found something incredibly valuable: the Nebraska Medicine doctor who would guide her through a frightening diagnosis. Cortney turned to Facebook after a routine surgery uncovered she had peritoneal mesothelioma, a rare cancer in the lining of her abdominal cavity and surface of her intestines. Through a support group, she learned about Dr. Jason Foster, Nebraska Medicine surgical oncologist, and within hours she was connected to the team at the Fred & Pamela Cancer Center and scheduled for a consultation the next week. “My experience with Dr. Foster and his team has been very positive,” Cortney says. “I honestly can’t think of a negative experience.” Cortney’s treatment plan involved intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemotherapy (HIPEC), which is also known as hot chemo. Hot chemo involves filling the abdomen with a solution balance salts, chemotherapy administered at temperature of 108°F that kills any cancer cells in the cavity or on the organ surfaces after the bulky tumors are removed. Research has shown that heat combined with chemotherapy amplifies chemo’s effectiveness and adds another mechanism to induce cancer cell death. Cortney is back in North Dakota and recovering well. She offers this advice for others facing a similar diagnosis. “First feel all the emotions you need to feel, it’s scary finding out you have cancer. Stay off the internet! Pray, give it all to God and ask him to guide your through your journey. Rally the troopers, you will need a support system and a shoulder to cry on.” And reflecting on the connection she made through Facebook, Cortney adds, “Lastly, get to Dr. Foster and Nebraska Medicine. This is the best care you can get.”
