This past month, I was honored to be recognized by Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, MassDEP, at the Public Water Systems Awards ceremony for our work on reducing lead in childcare facilities. I am so grateful to have collaborated while at Clean Water Action with Amy Izen of Early Childhood Initiative and Healthy Chelsea, Tania Perez of Nurtury Early Education, Fran Roznowski a lead awareness advocate and Chelsea resident, and Xochitil Perez of MassDEP, to play a role in actualizing this work. This collaboration also depended on the Chelsea Department of Public Health, with Flor Amaya, PT DPT, MPH as Director of Public Health, the Chelsea Department of Public Works, with Jorman Mota, Assistant City Engineer, and Isaac Smith as the Environmental Compliance Coordinator, and Barbara Espinosa Barrera as Environmental Justice and Health Equity Organizer of GreenRoots, Inc., who continue to work to get the lead out of Chelsea. Such multistakeholder work reveals the necessity of forging deep partnerships when approaching complex environmental governance challenges such as lead in drinking water in schools and childcare facilities. I am proud to have been a part of such meaningful work, and to have received this recognition alongside such a strong coalition.

I recently spent a fun day with coworkers replanting garden boxes, laying new mulch, and planting flowers for Nurtury Early Education. I love supporting Nurtury, a nonprofit that provides high-quality care to over 1,000 children in the Boston area, and I’m grateful that Liberty Mutual Insurance helps me support my favorite causes. A big thank you to all our employees who are making a difference in our communities! #ServeWithLiberty

The Mildred Hailey Teams worked with Nurtury Early Education to welcome the students one morning at the local Learning Lab and hand out safety tee shirts as an inclusion to safety week. This care center is in between the two Mildred Hailey Projects in Jamaica Plain and students from the center walk by our sites daily. They find joy in interacting with the trades people and watching the equipment we use in action from afar. The students presented us with a poster board they have been working on. It shows pictures of our adjacent site and them learning about the equipment we use within the classroom. Thank you for allowing us to collaborate with you!

What happens when our bodies become a part of the learning process? Over the past couple of months, Louisa Penfold and I have been working with wonderful preschool teachers at Nurtury Early Education, introducing Art|Play, a research project in partnership between Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Boston Public Schools. Together, we explored action painting by creating a space for children to engage with paint as a creative material. We invited children to experiment with applying paint to large 3D cardboard canvases using different tools and their bodies. We documented these moments and shared them with families through a family day workshop we led, opening up conversations about the joy and role of contemporary art and play in early childhood development—and how these experiences can extend beyond the classroom. Thank you to Kathy, Stacy Davidson Minicucci M.Ed., HGSE colleagues Johanna S. Benson Putra Nanvi Jhala Rick Westerkamp Josy Hunter Huang Huanyan, and all the families who joined us on this journey!

I recently had the privilege of contributing to a workshop led by Ink Thanajaro at Nurtury Early Educationt that highlights Art|Play, a research project developed by Louisa Penfold in collaboration with Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. As part of Nurtury's Family Day workshop, I facilitated an action painting experience that explored the concept of coverage that invites children to experiment with various materials and tools to paint across large 3D cardboard and paper installation using their whole bodies. This approach encourages children to move, reach, and stretch as part of their creative process, transforming painting into a full-body exploration that supports sensory development, spatial awareness, and expressive agency. This workshop was an inspiring opportunity to witness how art becomes a bridge between formal and informal learning environments. Through shared documentation and open-ended engagement, we created a space where families could see children’s creativity, movement, and decision-making come alive, showcasing how this is not just as “art activities” but as meaningful learning experiences that can be extended at home. Thank you, Ink, for inviting me into this thoughtful and joyful project 🎨 ⭐ #ArtEducation #ProjectZero #EarlyChildhood #ActionPainting #FamilyEngagement #Documentation

Thank you to our board member, Jeff Freedman, for highlighting Nurtury's Family Child Care (FCC) Incubator in his recent blog post! When the idea of an "incubator" for early childhood educators was first proposed by our team, it was a groundbreaking concept. Now, we are proud to share that Nurtury’s FCC Incubator is officially up and running as of February 2025 - it's the first of its kind in Massachusetts and only second in the nation. By equipping educators with the start-up space and resources needed to launch their small businesses, Nurtury's FCC Incubator has enabled three new family child care entrepreneurs to open their programs and start providing on-site care to families in Boston. Read Jeff's blog post to learn more about how this innovative model came to be:

Today, we are reflecting on the power of community and our partnership visit at Nurtury Early Education’s Jamaica Plain Early Childhood Education Center. The One By One Project is here for Nurtury families when life throws the unexpected their way—because we know that one bill, one emergency, or one missing necessity can change everything. From car seats to rent assistance, from household essentials to helping keep the lights on, this is what real support looks like. A heartfelt THANK YOU to Stephanie Ellington, Senior Director of Development and Administration, and Taylor Connolly, Family Support Manager, for their dedication to strengthening our partnership year after year. In collaboration with Taylor and her colleagues, The One By One Project has paid over 60 bills for Nurtury families—that’s 60 moments when a family could breathe easier, knowing they had support. We know the year ahead will bring new challenges, and we couldn't be prouder to work with the Nurtury team to support local Boston families. #TheOneByOneProject #GreaterBostonNonprofit
