Congratulations to NV5's Liz Phipps and Thomas Murel for their recent recognition from ACEC/NC.   Liz, NV5’s Southeast Director of Transportation, received the Golden Eagle Award for her excellence in serving the engineering industry. With over 30 years experience throughout the Southeast, Liz has held many leadership positions within ACEC/NC since 2008, including currently serving as the national director.   Tom, NV5’s Utility Services Senior Project Manager, graduated from the ACEC Future Leaders Program. This program is designed to give participants of all experience levels the opportunity to explore concepts and means by which both personal learning and business performance may be increased.

Where and when does ChatGPT, Copilot, or Gemini store the data we put in — whether it’s a file upload or just what we type into the chat? This has been top of mind as I’ve been working to integrate AI deeper into our operations. I use AI for almost every task (including writing this post), but I’ve been digging into what boundaries exist around security, privacy, and proprietary information. Here’s a quick breakdown: 📌 ChatGPT (Free / Pro / Plus) Files and chats are stored on OpenAI’s U.S.-based secure servers, encrypted and tied to your chat history. You can “delete” chats and files, but due to a legal hold related to the NYT v. OpenAI lawsuit, OpenAI is now required to preserve all user chats — even deleted ones — indefinitely. Unless you opt out, your data may be used to help improve the model. Temporary Chat mode avoids saving data to your history, but content may still be retained for up to 30 days for safety. ✅ Bottom line: For most users, data is stored and may persist far longer than expected — even if you delete it. 📌 Microsoft Copilot (M365 for Business) Prompts and documents stay within your company’s Microsoft environment. Copilot doesn’t permanently store prompts, and data isn’t used to train models. Enterprise-grade compliance applies (e.g., GDPR, SOC 2, ISO 27001). For personal use, data may be shared with Bing services unless configured otherwise. 📌 Google Gemini (Workspace) In Workspace (business) accounts, prompts and content are not used to train Gemini and are governed by your org’s data security policies. In personal accounts, data may be stored or used to improve services unless you turn this off in settings. ⚙️ As we continue testing these tools across operations, proposals, and internal workflows, understanding where our data goes is critical to rolling them out responsibly. Construction is entering the final stretch at the City of Newton, Massachusetts Cooper Center for Active Living! With all rough-in work complete and drywall installed, finishes are now underway. HVAC equipment is in place and awaiting permanent power—once live, casework and final touches will begin. Substantial Completion is on track for November, with commissioning and punchlist activities scheduled for the final month.
