Tackling Chronic Kidney Disease: A Landmark Step Toward Standardized Care in Nigeria
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a growing public health concern in Nigeria- often linked with hypertension, diabetes, and other non-communicable diseases. Late diagnosis and the absence of a standardized national protocol have long fueled fragmented care, inconsistent referrals, and preventable deaths across the health system.
To change this narrative, Population Services International Nigeria, through the Healthy Heart Africa Project with support from AstraZeneca, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare Nigeria and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), convened stakeholders to a three-day technical meeting to develop Nigeria’s first- ever National CKD Protocol.
This milestone effort produced evidence-based, standardized guidance for the prevention, screening, diagnosis, referral, and management of CKD at all levels of care—primary, secondary, and tertiary. Beyond the protocol itself, the process fostered strong stakeholder consensus, bringing together government institutions, professional associations, academia, and implementing partners around a shared vision for better kidney health outcomes in Nigeria.
At PSI Nigeria, we remain committed to working with partners to ensure adoption, dissemination, and capacity-building for implementation at both national and sub-national levels, so Nigerians at risk of CKD can access timely, life-saving care.
A huge thank you to our partners Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare Nigeria, National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and funder AstraZeneca who made this possible. Together, we’re strengthening Nigeria’s health system and saving lives.
