  • Today we celebrate the 87th anniversary of the groundbreaking of the Presidio Theatre on July 8, 1938. Located at the Main Post in the Presidio, the theatre was constructed by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the Spanish Colonial style. The theater was at the center of the Army’s community life and a beloved gathering place for decades, hosting a variety of events, including movies, live performances, and radio broadcasts. After the Army's departure in 1994, the Presidio transitioned to a national park, and the theater underwent a significant rehabilitation project, reopening in 2019 as a multi-media performing arts space. Today, you can attend a festival, film screening, theatrical production, live concert or more. And like all businesses in the Presidio, every dollar spent, keeps the park beautiful and free for all to enjoy. • Today marks 30 years since the U.S. Army lowered its flag at the Presidio of San Francisco, closing a military chapter that spanned nearly 150 years. On this day in 1994, the Presidio officially joined the national park system—transforming the Presidio from one of the country’s most historic Army posts into a public park for all. Originally established by Spain in 1776, the Presidio passed through Mexican and then American hands, serving as a key military post in major national and global events—from the Mexican-American War to World War II. Troops stationed here helped defend the West Coast, provided disaster relief during the 1906 earthquake, and launched missions across the Pacific. In the decades since that final flag ceremony, the Presidio has become a place of renewal, where historic buildings are preserved, natural habitats restored, and community life thrives. https://bit.ly/4l2g2a8
