RoboStar is a centre of excellence dedicated to research and technology transfer in the area of Software Engineering for Robotics. Robostar is one of the largest research groups in the world, bringing together a diverse membership of researchers working in robotics under a single umbrella. Its membership comprises UK researchers from the universities of York, Sheffield, Surrey, King’s College, and from Thales. Our research and development focuses on model-based software engineering: modelling, simulation, testing, and verification, covering control software, physical models of the platform and scenarios, environment assumptions, and human behaviour.

I’ve now wrapped up my 8-week internship at the University of York through the Google DeepMind Ready programme! Over the summer, I worked on automating the deployment of neural networks from RoboTool (a formal modelling and verification framework for robotics, developed by the RoboStar Centre for Software Engineering for Robotics) to ROS 2. I used the Xtend programming language to generate C++ code and ONNX/ONNX Runtime to export models and perform optimised inference, with the goal of enabling cross-robotic platforms. It’s been a rewarding experience working alongside some extraordinary people! Thank you to Alvaro Miyazawa for your support and guidance throughout, and to Google DeepMind, The Hg Foundation, Royal Academy of Engineering, and the University of York - Computer Science for running the programme at York!

Since its launch, the initiative has created over 130 internship opportunities across UK universities. Two weeks ago, I wrapped up eight incredible weeks of Google DeepMind’s Research Ready Programme – and I couldn't have asked for a better finale than receiving the Best Research Award at TAROS 2025. Working alongside Dr. Frank Soboczenski at the University of York, I focused on real-time financial NLP for high-frequency trading. The challenge was balancing speed, accuracy, and explainability - three qualities that typically require trade-offs in quantitative finance. I evaluated several small language models alongside FinBERT and developed a fine-tuning approach that optimised both performance and interpretability. The results: · Cut inference latency from 220ms → 1.5ms · Boosted F1 scores from 79% → 89% · Built an explainability dashboard to identify patterns and guide fine-tuning But honestly, the real highlight was working with the other interns. Everyone brought different approaches to their projects, and learning from how others tackled their challenges taught me as much as my own research did. ✨ Great seminar at RoboStar today with Louise Dennis and Dhaminda Abeywickrama from The University of Manchester, presenting their joint work with Diana Carolina Benjumea Hernandez on: “Towards a Reference Assurance Case for an Adaptable Autonomous Inspection Robot” They showed how robotics and AI are moving into safety-critical environments, and why we need strong ways to build trust before deployment. Their work in CRADLE Robotics and AI is developing a reference assurance case, with templates, tools, and methods, linked to corroborative V&V, so that evidence for safety and reliability can adapt as robots and their environments change. I recently had the opportunity to complete an internship with the RoboStar Centre for Software Engineering for Robotics as part of the Google DeepMind Research Ready Programme, where I contributed to research at the intersection of AI and Robotics. My project focused on metamodelling artificial neural networks (ANNs) to support the modelling of intelligent robots. I was fortunate to present this work to an audience of academics at TAROS 2025, which was both a challenging and rewarding experience. It was a pleasure to work on this project, and I would like to thank Ana Cavalcanti for being my supervisor on this project, assisting me throughout research I can be proud of!
