A $2.8M The National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant to develop new devices to treat epilepsy has been awarded to Dr. Hai Sun, chief of Neurosurgery at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, an RWJBarnabas Health facility, and vice chair of clinical affairs and associate professor of neurosurgery in the Department of Neurosurgery at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Dr. Sun will work with faculty at Emory University School of Medicine and Stevens Institute of Technology to develop the next generation of responsive neurostimulation devices that can be implanted in the brains of people affected with severe epileptic seizures to reduce or eliminate their occurrence. RWJBarnabas Health’s Global Health team recently visited Utuado, a rural and mountainous agriculture community in Puerto Rico, in partnership with Direct Relief, to provide cardiology, pulmonology and gynecology services at COSSAO Community Health Clinic. The team also provided homebound visits and health checks to local residents. Over the years, both RWJBarnabas Health and Direct Relief have worked to increase access to health care services through partnerships with community-based organizations on the island.
