North Carolina Society of American Foresters reposted this
It was such a pleasure presenting at the Society of American Foresters Conference in Asheville this week! Big thanks to Nate Osborne for the invite! I especially enjoyed Tommy Cade's Presentation with The Eastern Band of Cherokee. He used the term co-stewardship multiple times, and when I asked him if he meant co-stewardship in the way there are multiple organizations stewarding the land or in the way that the land stewards us as much as we steward the land, he said "yes, both." #Co_stewardship

It was a fantastic meeting this week in Asheville! Thank you to Nate and the Pisgah Chapter for hosting the us! Everyone who put in the work to make this happen, you are superstars! #saf #ncsaf #forestry
Members of the Appalachian Society of American Foresters met in Asheville this week for our summer meeting. Our discussions focused on the theme of creating "Resilient Forests: Overcoming Challenges through Collaboration and Innovation". Bryan Hulka, Michael Cheek and Casey Wofford discussed challenges in North Carolina related to consolidation of pulpwood markets, natural disasters like Hurricane Helene and non-native pests. While the challenges we face are large, Ashley Case provided a method to transmute feelings of anxiety into positive action through recognition of the relationship between our mind, heart and hands. A diverse range of expertise will be needed to address our challenges, and Simón Sandoval, Joe Rossetti and Steve Morrone demonstrated how repeatable processes, artificial intelligence and biomathematical models can focus and optimize our efforts. Emerging analytical methods are useful, and we learned from Tommy Cabe how they can be complimented with traditional ecological knowledge. Sustainability in forestry includes people development, as demonstrated by the outstanding work George Hahn, PhD shared around how Haywood Community College developed partnerships and programs equipping the next generation of foresters for a rewarding and productive career. We rounded out our meeting with a discussion in the forest around enhancing habitat for wildlife like the Ruffed Grouse and American Woodcock, thanks to Sara Cerv and Sean Barry (Ruffed Grouse Society | American Woodcock Society). Congratulations to our three community college scholarship recipients: Grace Lingo, Joe Simon and Sarah Sayer! These are outstanding professionals I would encourage that you connect with soon. Thanks Alexander Byers for supporting our Haywood Community College Students! Thanks to our sponsors PRT Growing Services Ltd., North Carolina State University, Weyerhaeuser, ArborGen, Resource Management Service LLC, Columbia Forest Products, LandMark Spatial Solutions, LLC, and Reems Creek Plant Nursery! I'd also like to recognize the dedication of the volunteers who took leadership to organize this meeting: Daniel Callaghan, Seth Plank, Sara Cerv, Noelle Arena, Blair (Allman) Owen and Wren Gershman. If the discussion above interests you, let me know. We welcome everyone to participate in our Society of American Foresters meetings, even if you do not come from a traditional forestry background.
