A message from our National Commander, Merle Heatwole, in remembrance of those impacted by Hurricane Katrina 20 years ago. ⬇️
𝙄𝙣 𝙍𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙗𝙮 𝙃𝙪𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙣𝙚 𝙆𝙖𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙖 Today, we pause with solemn hearts to remember the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina twenty years ago. The storm claimed over 1,800 lives, displaced hundreds of thousands, and left an indelible mark on our nation’s soul. For many, the pain endures—not only in memory, but in the ongoing journey of healing and restoration. In the face of unimaginable loss, we witnessed extraordinary acts of compassion. The Salvation Army was honored to stand alongside survivors, first responders, and volunteers—serving meals, offering shelter, and praying with those who mourned. Our mission then, as now, was to be a beacon of hope in the darkest of hours. We remember not only the tragedy, but the triumph of the human spirit. We give thanks for the tireless work of our officers, staff, and volunteers who answered the call with courage and grace. And we acknowledge the power of prayer that sustained so many through the storm and its aftermath. As people of faith, we invite you to join us in prayer today: 🙏 For the families who lost loved ones 🙏 For the communities still rebuilding 🙏 For the strength to respond with love in every crisis Let us be reminded that in every storm, God is our refuge and strength. May our remembrance lead us not only to reflection, but to a renewed commitment—to serve, to uplift, and to love those facing storms whenever and wherever they may occur. In His service, Commissioner Merle Heatwole National Commander, The Salvation Army USA
