  • “My favorite part of this work is the people and the stories behind them,” they explained. “I get to celebrate the moments that staff don’t always stop to notice because they’re so focused on giving their best to students. I get to say, look at what you’ve done. Look at the difference you’re making. You did this. That’s what excites me, being a cheerleader for our staff, our students, and our families.” When you see Brian Nguyen “bri” (they/he) in action, it’s often through a camera lens or behind the scenes of a story. As the Communications Specialist for the School District of Lancaster, no two days look the same. Storytelling and people are at the center of Bri’s role. They see their job not only as a way to share information, but as a way to reflect back what makes this district special. They hopes his work continues to remind staff, students, and families that they are seen, that they belong, and that even a small moment can leave a lasting impact. “If we can make a difference in at least one person’s life, even if it is just through a smile, that is enough. Communication is about building those bridges, reminding people they matter, and helping us all feel a little more connected.” This week's staff shoutout goes to them, thank you for all that you do bri! The next time you see them, be prepared for a big hug. Read their full story on our website. #sdolpa #sdolproud #lancasterpa #education #communications

  • Settling into the new school year means finding your groove...sometimes literally! Our middle school principals took on the new Cupid Shuffle to remind us that influence isn’t just about what you see on a screen. Sure, viral dances are fun (and they nailed it!), but the real influence is what happens every day in our schools, where principals, teachers, and staff are shaping futures, one student at a time. #SDoLPA #SDoLproud #lancasterpa #education #backtoschool #togetherwecan

  • August is National Black Business Month, and we had the opportunity to join the African American Cultural Alliance of Lancaster for their Black Business Mixer at Busy Bodies Play Cafe. The evening brought together entrepreneurs, community leaders, alumni, families, and neighbors for an inspiring celebration of Black-owned businesses in Lancaster. For the School District of Lancaster, events like this resonate deeply with our mission. We are committed to building equitable opportunities for our students, and that includes ensuring they can see themselves reflected in the businesses, leaders, and innovators who shape our city. When our students see alumni and community members thriving as business owners, it shows them that their own goals are possible here at home. The mixer was about creating a space where belonging felt tangible and where representation was celebrated. From fitness and art to food and creative services, the diversity of Black entrepreneurship on display highlighted the vital role these businesses play in Lancaster’s economy and culture. We thank the African American Cultural Alliance and Busy Bodies Café for creating a space that uplifts and empowers. Supporting Black-owned businesses is about building a more inclusive future for our students, families, and alumni. #SDoLPA #SDoLProud #McCaskeyProud #lancasterpa #supportlocal #supportsmallbusiness #community #education

  • “I love seeing students smile, have new experiences and filled with pride. I want Carter & MacRae to be a place where kids want to come every day, and where families feel supported and connected.” This week's staff shoutout goes to Shane Howell. In partnership with the Lancaster Recreation Commission, we are proud to introduce Mr. Howell as the first Community School Director at Carter and MacRae Elementary, the district’s newest community school. Known to students and families simply as “Mr. Shane,” he brings 15 years of experience in before & after-school programming, behavioral health, and youth development to his new role. Mr. Shane is well known for his ability to connect with students through both structure and fun. Whether it’s greeting every child in the hallway, leading riddles and games between activities, or pulling out his boombox for a round of karaoke, he has a way of making every child feel seen and included. Even students who are shy find themselves drawn in by his energy, gaining confidence simply by being part of the moment. “I’ve always believed that play and relationships go hand in hand with learning,” he said. “Sometimes passing a football back and forth opens the door to conversations that matter most.” As Mr. Shane steps into this new role, one thing is certain, Carter & MacRae will continue to be a place where students are celebrated, families are embraced, and learning extends far beyond the classroom. Please join us in welcoming Mr. Shane to the Carter & MacRae community. In partnership with the Lancaster Recreation Commission and our staff, we are building a stronger future for our students, one relationship at a time. • Graduation marks the beginning of a new chapter filled with hope and opportunity. Yet, for many students, stepping into college or trade school also comes with a list of practical needs that can feel overwhelming. This summer, senior residents from Willow Valley Communities stepped forward to ease that transition. With generosity and care, they collected college essentials, everything from laundry supplies and notebooks to coffee makers and gently used suitcases. The School District of Lancaster also provided shower packs, towels, toothbrushes, and dorm kits, ensuring our graduates leave home with the basics covered. Perhaps the most meaningful gift came in the form of encouragement. Former teachers and Willow Valley residents Linda Helveston and Suzy Davis personally handed out Amazon gift cards, along with words of support and excitement for what lies ahead. These small but thoughtful contributions carry with them a powerful message to our graduates that they are not alone. We are grateful for community partners like Willow Valley, whose generosity helps turn milestones into smoother beginnings. This collaboration reminds us that education is not a journey taken in isolation, but a collective investment in the future. To the Class of 2025, we celebrate your achievements and look forward to all you will accomplish. And to our community partners, thank you for showing what it means to stand beside our students as they step boldly into their next chapter. #sdolpa #sdolproud #mccaskeyproud #community #education

  • The McCaskey High School Class of 2026 started their senior year in a way that was both symbolic and unforgettable by gathering together at dawn for the annual Senior Sunrise. Before the first bell of the school year even rang, seniors wrapped themselves in blankets, huddled with friends, and watched as the sun rose over McCaskey’s campus. The early morning light served as a powerful reminder that this is the beginning of their final chapter as high school students. Senior Sunrise is an opportunity to pause together at the start of their journey, looking forward to the moments that will define their senior year. We are so proud of the Class of 2026 for embracing this new tradition with such joy and energy. May this sunrise be the first of many bright moments this school year has to offer. Congratulations, Red Tornado, this is your year! #sdolpa #sdolproud #mccaskeyproud #classof2026 #highschool #backtoschool #seniors

  • This summer, three of our own McCaskey High School students, Sabine Zimmerman, Aleyna Abraham, and Hasset Tesfaye-Desalgn, took part in a transformative two-week residential program at Dickinson College. The Knowledge for Freedom (KFF) seminar, now in its fifth year, gives rising seniors the chance to step into the world of higher education, explore big ideas, and begin charting their own futures. The application process was highly selective, drawing interest from across Pennsylvania. In fact, this year was the most competitive yet, with just 15 students selected statewide. To be chosen speaks volumes about the talent and readiness of Sabine, Aleyna, and Hasset. For two weeks in Carlisle, these McCaskey students lived in campus dorms and joined peers from across the region in a challenging three-hour daily course, “Knowledge for Freedom.” The seminar, led by Dickinson professors, including McCaskey alumnus Matthew Pinsker (Class of 1986), encouraged students to engage deeply with fundamental questions about democracy, freedom, and self-government. Using the history of abolition movements as a foundation, students examined how individuals and communities have fought to expand liberty and equality throughout history. • When Selma Toporan moved to the United States from Bosnia, she faced the challenges so many of our families know well, new culture, new language, new relationships, and new social norms. Out of those experiences, she has created something remarkable: Adjusting to Life in the USA: A Complete Guide to Culture, Belonging, and Essential Life Skills for Newcomers, Long-Time Residents, and Their Supporters. Selma, now an academic advisor with our Cyber Pathways Academy, joined ABC27’s Author Spotlight to share her book and her journey. Her work reflects the heart of SDoL where diversity enriches learning, and where each voice has the power to inspire. We are proud to celebrate Selma’s accomplishment and the message of hope and belonging her book brings. Her journey is a reminder that every story has the power to shape the way we understand and support one another. Way to go Selma! #SDoLPA #SDoLProud #McCaskeyProud #education #community
