Please join us in congratulating Yery Pale and Keiry Morales Romero for successfully certifying as a FOH Trainers! 🎉 Yery, a native of Burkina Faso, joined the Rockville team in February 2022 as a host. Nearly three years later, she still loves every aspect of her experience at Silver Diner. For certification she was able to showcase all her training abilities and flexibility. She was thorough in teaching her trainee all required information, diligently following the Host training manual. Yery communicated effectively by letting her sweet and kind personality shine through, making her trainee feel comfortable. She always ensured that her trainee’s questions were answered while helping her understand her responsibilities as a host with clarity. Away from work Yery, holds a real estate license, which she obtained while not only juggling work but also college. Yery, plans to continue focusing on her education with the goal to one day, like her dad, become a diplomat. ---- Keiry has been with us since the opening of the Ball Park Silver Diner in Navy Yard in 2022. Since then she has contributed significantly to the training of new servers having trained at least 2/3rds of the server team. Keiry makes training fun by implementing different learning techniques. She provides all essential information to help new servers succeed while encouraging their growth and understanding of their role. As she says, "I want people to be able to grow alongside me." Keiry is a reliable team member and appreciated by her team, she looks forward to continuing to growth with the SD family, with the main goal to finish school to be a nurse. Thank you, Rockville and Navy Yard teams, for your excitement and commitment to developing our people. Thank you, Yery and Keiry, for all your hard work and for living our mission "To Be The Best We Can Be!" 🎆

Join us in congratulating our latest bar trainer at the Rio Silver Diner, Kimberly Solano Cisneros! Kimberly began her journey in Rio in May 2023 as a server and later promoted to be a bartender. She is a very studious associate that takes her time to master new skills in order to take on new challenges including being a bar trainer. She didn't realize she was signing up to be a leader when she first started bartending, but while focusing on this certification, she has opened her mind to filling that role at this location that has lots of potential to take our bar program to a higher level. When not exceling at work, she loves to spend time with her family as she is the oldest sister out of 4 girls. Kimberly has many goals in her mind including continuing her education at a university, and most importantly she wants to be a role model for her family. Silver Diner is a center of inspiration for her as she sees success around her in the company and sees that as another pathway she can take to support her goals. While discussing Our Company Values during her certification, she focused on Integrity and Balance that supports her way of life. In her own words, Integrity means "Being more honest", "Show up for people in your life by being dependable" and "Be ethical and exceed the expectations of others". For Balance, she believes in the "work-life balance that is enjoyable and healthy". Thank you Josselyn Fajardo and The Rio Team for setting Kimberly up for success. Congratulations Kimberly!

Last week, the training team hosted a Front of the House Train the Trainer (TTT) Class for Silver: New American Brasserie & Silver Social! TTT is an opportunity for our people to continue development into leaders as certified trainers in their positions. It represents our commitment to growing our people and building a strong foundation with them. In this class, we had 5 associate leaders in attendance coming from Bethesda and Navy Yard. The associates had the opportunity to tell us how they were inspired to become trainers, and their responses were incredible! They all had innate goals to always strive to learn more and to help others around them. We were able to reinforce that Our Mission is "To Be the Best We Can Be!" and having associates become specialists in their positions is an example of individuals achieving that mission. We also reinforced that the base of our balanced triangle is Our People who will always be "Our Most Precious Resource" and their influence as trainers to make decisions that represent Our Brand is important. With these valuable gems in their minds while they complete their trainer certification process, they gain the confidence and knowledge to become future leaders that support Our Mission and Our Values all together. A big thanks to the Ball Park team hosting our TTT class on the opening day for The Nationals MLB season! Our class had a great view of the stadium while they collaborated and learned together. Congratulations everyone on this step in your leadership journeys!

A look back at Silver Brands history. Ten years ago, we began to grow as a company, with new locations opening each year, both within the DMV core and further out to new markets. In 2016, we opened our Frederick location. Frederick was our second Silver Diner to feature a full bar, and the last of our classic diner design before we debuted our 2.0 design. It was also our last restaurant to open with table juke boxes and the classic red server shirts. The one word to describe this phenomenal opening team is "Family". There was a special closeness with this team that has endured to this day. Many of the year one associates have grown to become trainers, supervisors and managers. Nearly the entire opening training team has grown into management, with several becoming GMs or joining our Support Center Teams (Shout out to Marketing, Training, and HR!). Families have grown and friendships have blossomed. Frederick truly embodies our mission "To Be The Best We Can Be!"

Silver Diner is much more than a diner! Our growth over the last decade has seen us expand into the polished casual space and elevate our brands through continued menu innovation and always living our mission "To Be The Best We Can Be!" To celebrate this growth, our parent company has rebranded as Silver Brands! Nothing is changing about how we operate, or what makes our restaurant brands special. Just less of a mouthful to say our name compared to Silver Diner Development LLC. All the more room for our fresh and local menu!

An amazing story from our Merrifield Restaurant celebrating Jose Garcia for 15 years with us and recognition as their Associate of the Year for 2024! ______________________________ Some people clock in. Some people get the job done. And then there are those rare few who become the job—who pour their spirit into every task, every corner, every unseen detail. For 15 years, Jose ‘Nino’ Garcia has been more than a team member. He has been the quiet heartbeat of Silver Diner Merrifield. The steady hands that keep it all together. Before the sun rises, he is there. When deliveries stack high, he is lifting. When something breaks, he is fixing. And when the weight of the day grows heavy, he carries it with a smile—not out of duty, but out of deep, unwavering pride. Ask him for help, and the answer is always “Yes.” Not for recognition. Not for applause, but because that’s who he is. A title could never capture the fullness of his work. Busser? Dishwasher? No—Jose is a guardian of the diner’s rhythm, a keeper of its pulse, a testament to its culture. And today, we see him. We honor him. We thank him—for showing us what dedication looks like, what service should be, and what it means to live our mission every single day. Silver Diner Merrifield is better because of him. And for that, we celebrate Jose ‘Nino’ Garcia—our Associate of the Year for 2024. ~Baba Sarr Area Director For Silver Diner

Will the Magic Last Another 40 Years? Earlier today, I went with my family to Silver Diner to enjoy some pancakes and eggs. As we immersed ourselves in the restaurant’s nostalgic ambience, I couldn’t help but wonder—what has kept it thriving for so long, even as close competitors like IHOP struggle to survive in the competitive and ever-changing food industry? Silver Diner is more than just a classic American family restaurant. It strives to create the vibrant feel of the 1950s, drawing customers back with its distinctive charm. From the traditional music jukebox at every table to its striking retro decor, the diner offers a vintage and timeless experience. While I can see how the décor may appeal to my parents’ generation, I wondered if it would appeal to a younger generation without the nostalgic attachments. How would the restaurant continue to succeed in such a competitive market while staying true to its mission and appeal? Will its 1950s décor appeal to Gen Zs and Gen Alphas who want more modern aesthetics? This challenge will demand that Silver Diner become adaptable to the changing times. While it may find it hard to reform its 1950s décor – which is its unique advantage – it can introduce elements that appeal to this younger generation. For instance, it may incorporate elements in its décor that increase its “Instagram Factor.” Its menu can offer wellness themes while it can sell retro as the new chic. Silver Diner management may already be thinking along these lines. For instance, they have new items on their menu every time we visit. They now have healthier alternatives to eggs and sausages, with items with funky names like Burrata Shakshuka, Oaxaca (Wah-haw-kah), Omelette, etc. These items may have always been on the menu, and I never paid attention as I went for my usual buttermilk pancakes and eggs. As I cleaned out my plate, I concluded that Silver Diner’s magic, which has sustained since its founding in 1989, will continue for another four decades if it can innovate with its menu to accommodate changing tastes and preferences and by integrating digital, modern, and experiential elements for the younger generations as they grow.
