Is the Smartphone Market in Italy Moving Toward Commoditization? Are smartphones still seen as symbols of identity and innovation, or are they becoming standardized commodities in consumers’ eyes? In this article published in Sinergie Italian Journal of Management (Vol. 43, Issue 1, 2025), Laura Castaldi, Alessandro Augurio, Clelia Mazzoni, Felice Addeo e Olimpia Matarazzo explore whether the Italian smartphone market shows signs of commoditization. Through a large-scale empirical study, the authors examine how individual characteristics, product attributes, and usage motivations influence customer satisfaction, smartphone lifespan, and the number of devices owned. Can sustainability drive investor interest in equity crowdfunding? In the paper “Sustainable projects in crowdfunding campaigns: an explorative study in Italy”, Luca Ferrucci, Marina Gigliotti, and Antonio Picciotti investigate the role of social and environmental goals in shaping the success of equity crowdfunding initiatives. Based on 240 projects from a leading Italian platform, the study reveals that sustainability-oriented ventures tend to attract more investors and wider ownership participation, even though they don’t outperform purely business-oriented campaigns in terms of funds raised. How Do Narratives Shape Prosocial Crowdfunding on Platforms Like Kiva? As purpose-driven finance gains traction, how do borrowers’ stories influence lenders’ decisions—and foster social and economic empowerment? In this article published in Sinergie Italian Journal of Management, Riccardo Maiolini, Caterina Tedeschi e Francesco Rullani explore how borrowers on Kiva use narratives to attract funding in prosocial lending-based crowdfunding. Using topic modeling on over 36,000 projects, the authors identify recurring themes—ranging from entrepreneurial struggles and family needs to empowerment and poverty alleviation. Their findings reveal how storytelling mobilizes lenders’ intrinsic motivations such as empathy, duty and personal resonance.
