Last week, our CEO Blake Dressel had the honor of presenting to city executives from across California with Stanford’s California-Global Energy, Water, & Infrastructure Innovation Initiative. With the AI revolution here and the climate crisis intensifying, there is no better place to face this moment head on. We wanted to take a moment to share the message we gave them. SOURCE is building the operating system for the climate crisis. Bold, right? But with global temperatures breaking records year after year and energy prices soaring, it’s clear we need to do something different. The good news? Fifty years after the 1973 energy crisis sparked a wave of energy R&D, we now have proven, profitable solutions to transform cities: energy efficiency, rooftop solar, electric vehicles, and intelligent buildings. So what’s holding us back? The Hassle Tax. It’s the crushing complexity of aggregating fragmented data, bridging several domains of expertise, and aligning internal teams. That friction kills even the most financially sound projects from getting across the finish line. Blake saw this firsthand during his time at the U.S. Department of Energy. That experience led him to graduate school at Stanford, where he founded SOURCE to tackle this exact challenge. SOURCE develops industrial-grade digital twins to create a unified AI model for infrastructure. These intelligent, live profiles empower real-time decision-making and workflow automation across large organizations to model business scenarios and provide a sole source of truth. Just as people have social media profiles today, infrastructure from schools and grocery store chains to data centers will soon have dynamic digital profiles of their own. These profiles fuse structured and unstructured data and hydrate with real-time sensor inputs to speed project delivery, provide real-time intelligence, and increase operation team productivity. Without Stanford’s support, we couldn’t have broken through the numerous barriers that early stage climate technology ventures face. SOURCE is in the building! Here we are designing solar and HVAC electrification upgrades for Education for Change Public Schools, a charter network serving 3,000+ students in Oakland, CA. EFC is doing the hard work of delivering high-quality, culturally responsive education. Our job is to make sure their buildings support that mission, with clean air, stable indoor temperatures, and lower utility bills. Pictured is one of 23 projects we are currently developing. Here we ran automated building energy modeling to identify the commercial buildings with the largest energy savings potential and then conducted an ASHRAE level 2 energy audit to assess cost effective opportunities for implementing HVAC electrification, rooftop solar, and demand response. Too often the HASSLE TAX (the friction of evaluating, designing, and executing retrofits) keeps high return projects from getting done. AI will take us a long way. But the true magic happens when its built around the relevant context to empower domain expertise. Only a trained engineer and a dedicated project team can carry a project from start to finish.
