About us
Southern Nuclear operates a total of eight units for Alabama Power and Georgia Power at the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant near Dothan, Ala.; the Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant near Baxley, Ga., and the Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant near Waynesboro, Ga. The company recently achieved commercial operation on Vogtle Units 3 and 4. Both of these units represent historic achievements for the nuclear industry as the first new nuclear units to reach commercial operation and be built in the United States in the last three decades.

Earlier this year, Vogtle Unit 2 became the first U.S. commercial nuclear power plant to operate using uranium fuel enriched above historical limits. This milestone sets us up to operate our units – and other units currently operating or under development – for longer periods with higher output. For more than a decade, our nuclear engineers have consistently delivered industry-shaping innovations. The development, testing and installation of next generation fuel builds on Southern Company’s proven track record of innovation to ensure our units continue to run reliability for the benefit of all.

Still feeling incredibly grateful after attending the U.S. Women in Nuclear (U.S. WIN) 2025 There’s something powerful about being in a room filled with strong, intelligent, driven women. The Trail Blazers, the ones lifting others, and every single one there shaping the future of nuclear energy. The energy, the support, and the shared sense of purpose was nothing short of empowering. I’ve often found myself in rooms where I’m the only woman. That’s why events like this matter!! They remind us we’re not alone, and that there’s an entire network of women out there making waves, breaking barriers, and doing it together. Woodruff School alumnus John Williams, senior vice president of technical services and external affairs at Southern Nuclear, recently hosted President Ángel Cabrera and members of the Georgia Tech community at Plant Vogtle as part of the 2025 President’s Summer Tour. The group toured the largest generator of clean energy in the United States and saw the groundbreaking AP1000 technology in action. ⚛️🐝 In his role, Williams oversees fleet support functions essential to the safe and reliable operation of Southern Nuclear’s operating fleet and provides strategic leadership and direction for all external Southern Company nuclear efforts.
