As summer wraps up and our interns return to campus, we’re celebrating their impact at Southland and looking forward to meeting potential members of our next class this fall. David Israel, Project Engineer Intern, supported two major efforts this summer: the Purple Line II Metro extension in Maryland and a data center project. From coordinating equipment breakout and transport to writing RFIs, submitting fabrication requests through Stratus, and managing O&M submittals, David played a key role in progressing this job forward. At his data center site, David took initiative by assisting with change orders, safety audits, and material takeoffs. He also independently set up project trailer infrastructure, resolved technical issues, and configured modules in Autodesk Construction Cloud. “These experiences helped me better understand duct and pipe systems, MEP drawings, and the value of clear communication with contractors and manufacturers. This internship not only sharpened my construction management skills but also gave me a real-world view of how complex projects are successfully executed,” David shared. Can you picture yourself gaining hands-on jobsite experience next summer like David? In today's world, energy efficiency projects should be thought of as more than a component upgrade, but rather as a strategic enabler of long-term resilience and operational value. "Instead of defaulting to simple equipment replacements or renewable installations, we focus first on how existing systems perform, emphasizing demand reduction strategies before considering additional renewable energy supply," Eric Nyenhuis, PE, Energy Consulting Director, said. We’re proud to support the The University of Texas at Arlington with the renovation and expansion of its Life Sciences Building, delivering updated classroom and lab spaces for students and faculty. Our team is providing design-assist electrical services, sourcing and installing a full range of electrical equipment, from a 15 kilovolt (kV) medium-voltage switch to new distribution panels, paralleling gear, and receptacles. We're also coordinating fire alarm, access control, and audiovisual, and teledata raceways through our BIM team to streamline installation. Despite the challenges of working in an active building, our team remains focused on safety and efficiency, ensuring this space will meet the university’s growing needs for years to come. #DesignAssist #BuiltBySouthland #Electrical

This #FieldFriday, we're highlighting ongoing work at Penn Medicine, University of Pennsylvania Health System, Farm Journal Building, where our team is replacing the air handling unit glycol cooling and steam heating coils and piping. To improve safety and efficiency, the majority of this project is being completed in our fabrication shops, where we're fabricating and assembling modular piping and coils. To accomplish this, "The coils were stacked and secured, and the pipe was fabricated and assembled on a Unistrut skid," Michael Jones, Foreman, said. The project is currently 80% complete, and we’re proud of the collaboration and craftsmanship driving it forward. #FabricationInnovaton #AHU #HealthcareConstruction #Fabrication
