What “Tailoring Your Resume” Actually Means for Technical Candidates As an agency, we speak with candidates across the country daily and review hundreds of resumes each week. Part of those conversations naturally includes resumes, what skills candidates choose to highlight, how they frame their experiences, and ultimately, how they present themselves to potential employers. Most resumes we see are written to showcase all job history and skills, but not necessarily targeted to a specific role. That is where tailoring comes in. When we suggest “tailoring your resume,” here is what we actually mean: 1. Highlight the must-have skills clearly. If a role requires React.js and you have that experience, do not bury it in your “Skills” section. Showcase it under your current role with tangible examples of how you have used it. 2. Focus on tangible responsibilities, not storytelling. Hiring managers are not looking for long narratives about your career. They want to see what you did, what tools you used, and the value you brought. Keep your bullets accomplishment-driven. 3. Keep length in check. There is no universal rule for resume length, but in our experience, one to two pages is the sweet spot for most technical professionals. Anything beyond three pages should usually be reserved for senior-level professionals with extensive experience. As recruiters, our perspective comes directly from conversations with hiring managers. We know not only what they want to see, but also what they do not want to see. At the end of the day, tailoring your resume is advice you can choose to follow or not. Some candidates prefer to keep things broad, and that is completely fine. But if you are actively on the market, making your resume sharper and more targeted can make a significant difference.
