I used to hate networking events. They always felt…transactional. I felt like I had to show up and "get something important done." I flipped my mindset, and they became the best way to meet new people. Here’s what works for me, and hopefully for you too: 👉 Research before you go. Figure out a few people you might want to meet, so you’re not wandering blind. 👉 Start with “you,” not “me.” Ask about what interests them or maybe something they learned recently. Lead with curiosity. 👉 Play the long game. Don’t rush into an ask. Build a relationship now, and save the "asks" for later. The shift: Stop thinking, “I need to close something tonight.” Start thinking, “I’m here to meet interesting people and learn.” If you leave an event with some genuine connections with interesting people...that’s when networking stops feeling "icky" and actually starts working. --- TECH WEEK by a16z is almost here! ngl, I struggle at events, and I've learned that "what do you do" is not a good question... 🙃 So... I've started using a psychology hack. I ask.... "what's a recent project you enjoyed working on?" Research suggests that: - asking someone to recall a positive experience - leads to them feeling positivity during the recall - ... then associating the positive feeling to you The question can also be framed in a way that asks the person to recall something interesting, as most people experience positivity while being interested in something. This latter framing might be a bit less awkward or interview-y...
