An Amish patient came to CHOP with unexplained brain swelling. Through advanced genetic testing, our researchers — working in collaboration with the Clinic for Special Children — identified an ultra-rare genetic disorder that is thousands of times more prevalent in the Old Order Amish community than in the general population. This discovery is advancing early diagnosis and enabling more precise, potentially life-saving treatment options for patients. Read more in The Philadelphia Inquirer article below.

In a new study, our researchers identified a connection between specific fats commonly found in processed foods and neutrophilic asthma — a more severe, non-allergic, and treatment-resistant form of the disease. These findings also suggest that existing medications may be repurposed to help manage this type of asthma, offering new hope for patients who don’t respond well to standard therapies. Late this summer, Healthier Together, our program to address social drivers of health in West and Southwest Philadelphia, FAB YOUTH PHILLY, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, the West Philadelphia YMCA and other local organizations gathered to celebrate more than 70 teens who completed swim lessons, lifeguard skill-building, certification -- and earned a paycheck. The Learn 2 Swim program serves as a first step in Fab Youth Philly's comprehensive lifeguard training pipeline. The multi-organizational collaboration seeks to address Philadelphia’s youth lifeguard shortage, while providing fun, safe, and engaging programming for young people in West and Southwest Philadelphia.
