Partnership for a Better San Diego is bringing new hope to youth aspiring to start their careers in San Diego. With the lack of opportunities and intense competition, finding stable employment has become increasingly difficult for young people, creating a youth unemployment crisis. “I'd been looking for work for a long time. It's been very difficult to find a job here in San Diego these past few years, especially with good union opportunities,” Emmanuel Paredes, workforce training graduate. The Partnership for a Better San Diego job training program, supported by the Youth Workforce initiative, offered Emmanuel three weeks of training and opened the doors for him to work as a housekeeper in a hotel in downtown San Diego. By connecting young people to opportunities, the Youth Workforce initiative grantees are reversing the alarming rise in unemployment and strengthening our community. Good journalism is a vital public service with real returns for our community's future. In our latest Stop & Talk episode, Scott Lewis of Voice of San Diego makes the case for why nonprofit journalism matters. It’s not just about telling stories, it’s about keeping communities informed, saving public dollars by holding power accountable, and serving as a pillar of democracy. At its best, journalism helps a community understand itself. It reflects who we are, reveals what’s working and what’s not, and connects us to each other through shared information. In a time of growing misinformation and declining trust, that mission has never been more essential. From Me to We 🤝: Building a Better Future through Humor, Humanity, and Hope! Baratunde Thurston, host of America Outdoors, former The Daily Show producer, and veteran storyteller, explores how we can all be a bridge to understanding in times of division and conflict and build stronger, inclusive communities. Sharing stories of resilience and hope, he demonstrates how accepting our interconnected and interdependent nature is the key to improving our relationships with the Earth, our fellow humans, and even the rising population of machines. Baratunde shares stories from his exploration of narrative universes touching on A.I., climate change, and the renewal of democracy. That’s right, renewal. That’s not a typo! The Library Foundation SD is opening doors for young adults by providing opportunities for them to build the skills and confidence needed for sustainable careers. California ranks among the five top states for teen unemployment at 21.2%, with many young adults unable to access training and opportunities. Through hands-on programs and mentorship, local San Diego libraries, like the City Heights Library, are giving youth lifelong skills in video production, multimedia art, and design. We’re proud to support the San Diego Library Foundation through our Youth Workforce Initiative because empowering youth is vital for their future and essential for the future of San Diego. Science saves lives.🔬 Medical research matters to us all. In his latest blog post, Prebys Foundation CEO Grant Oliphant shares his key takeaways from a powerful conversation with San Diego’s leading researchers, scientists, and advocates at a recent Teach-In alongside the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN). They explored what we lose when we defund discovery and what we can do together to support the researchers, advocates, and community members who make San Diego a beacon of innovation and healing.
