A milestone moment! Our giraffe calf, Tali, took her first steps outside this week with support from Caesar and Kesi. Given her progress, we're able to extend visiting hours at Giraffe House. It's now open from 12:30 - 3:30 pm each day. Tali's mom, Kipi, is still not sure about coming outside but she has the choice to do so whenever she's ready.

This week we celebrate #WorldLionDay! 🦁 Here at the Zoo, Hassan and Zuri inspire action for their wild cousins every day. This vulnerable species faces growing threats but, together, we can protect their future. Whenever you visit Maryland Zoo you're supporting our conservation efforts so their roars will always echo across the savanna.

Before laying eggs, Von der Decken's mud up the entrance to the nest box with the female inside, leaving only a small opening through which the male brings food for her and the chicks. When the chicks are bigger, the female breaks herself out, the nest is re-sealed, and both parents bring food until it's safe for the fledglings to finally explore the outside world. Our female has left the nestbox so look for juvenile hornbills in the African Aviary on your next visit. “We first brought Von der Decken’s to the Maryland Zoo in 2012 and have had success with our breeding pair and the offspring of these striking, highly social birds,” said Jen Kottyan, Curator of Birds. “These agile flyers are easy to spot with long, curved beaks. The female has a black beak while the male's is bright orange.”

We've long been a leader in environmental education, teaching generations of students and families how to protect wildlife and wild places. This spring, that work earned us a “Maryland Green Center” designation by the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education. Our staff recently traveled to Botswana to support the incredible work of our long-term conservation partner, Elephants for Africa. Led by Kate Evans, PhD, EfA is tracking bull African elephants to better understand their movements. They're also helping farmers protect their crops and teaching school children about wildlife ecology - all of which makes Botswana a better place for elephants and the communities that live alongside them.
