Serving the Tennessee Valley through Energy, Environment, and Economic Development.
About us
For more than nine decades, the Tennessee Valley Authority has provided affordable electricity, environmental stewardship and economic development opportunities to the Tennessee Valley. TVA was established by Congress in 1933 to address a wide range of environmental, economic and technological issues, including the need for low-cost electricity, and navigation and flood control along the Tennessee River system. TVA is fully self-financing, funding virtually all operations through electricity sales and power system bond financing. TVA makes no profit and receives no tax money. TVA’s power service territory includes most off Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia, covering 80,000 square miles and providing electricity to 10 million people at prices below the national average, TVA sales electricity to 153 local power companies and 61 directly served customers, including 54 industrial customers and 7 military and federal installations. Mission: TVA was built for the people – to improve the quality of life in a seven-state region through the integrated management of the region’s resources. The mission focuses on three key areas: • Energy – To provide reliable, affordable electric power throughout the Tennessee Valley. • Environment – To be a steward of the region’s natural resources. • Economic Development – To serve as a catalyst for sustainable economic development. ENERGY: As the nation’s largest government-owned power provider, TVA delivers reliable, competitively priced electricity local power companies and major industrial customers and federal installations. ENVIRONMENT: The Tennessee Valley Authority is committed to limiting the environmental impact of its operations and protecting the natural resources of the region. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: TVA helps strengthen the regional economy by building partnerships with communities and the business sector to foster job growth and retention.

A peregrine falcon nest was discovered at the former Paradise Fossil Plant in western Kentucky in 2023. Since this is a protected species, we worked quickly to halt demolition and save the falcons. We built a tower with a specialized nesting box, following guidance from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, in hopes of relocating the birds in the future. Demolition has been paused until 2027, and special crews are monitoring the area to ensure the birds' safety. Read more here: http://tva.me/4VGc50WKisR

Yesterday was National Hydropower Day—a reminder that for more than 90 years, hydropower has been the backbone of the Tennessee Valley region. From clean energy and flood control to navigation and recreation, it continues to play a vital role in powering our region’s future. None of it would be possible without the dedicated River Operations team that keeps our integrated river system flowing. 🌊⚡ #HydroIsHere

Rainfall has been all over the map this summer—plenty in some mountain areas, but not enough across the main river and western Valley. To keep water flowing for quality, supply, and power generation, we’ve had to use more water from tributary lakes like Norris, Cherokee, Douglas, and Fontana. That’s why lake levels are dropping now and will continue to trend lower through August. Still, they’re a great place to fish, swim, and soak up the last days of summer. ☀️🎣🌊 Learn more about how we manage the river system, and how the reservoirs work together to meet needs downstream. ⬇️ http://tva.me/clnc50WKlGL #TVAfun

On Tuesday, power demand across the Valley reached 32,270 megawatts — the highest so far this summer. Meeting demand like this takes a diverse mix of generation across our system. ⚡ For #TBT this week, we’re looking back at the Gallatin Fossil Plant on the Cumberland River in Middle Tennessee. Construction began in 1953, and its four generating units can produce 976 megawatts — enough to power more than half a million homes. Since then, modern emissions controls have been added while continuing to deliver reliable power. 🇺🇸
