The UN turns 80! 🇺🇳 Last night, Member States and partners joined the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and the President of the 80th Session of the General Assembly Annalena Baerbock to celebrate a living legacy of peace, progress, and shared purpose. As #UNGA80 unfolds next week, world leaders will gather in New York for high-level discussions on transforming #multilateralism, the UN system, climate, AI, and more. We’ll be sharing updates here, including “The Future Is Ours to Build” - a UN 2.0 conversation -, and an interactive exhibition on how data, digital, innovation, foresight, and behavioral science can accelerate impact. For the last 80 years, the UN has worked to make the world better for everyone, everywhere. That has led to some of humanity’s greatest triumphs, but we are facing growing complexities. The latest progress report of the UN80 Initiative outlines how we can face these complexities by breaking down silos in the UN system to work together better. It outlines bold steps to consolidate peace and security setups, forge a New Humanitarian Compact, review mergers where they add value, create joint knowledge hubs for sustainable development, and advance a stronger human rights approach. I have shared the report with UN member countries ahead of next week’s General Assembly’s and will present it formally in October. 🌍 Bringing Science to the Heart of the UN 🔬    The Secretary-General António Guterres joined his Scientific Advisory Board and representatives from its network institutions for their annual retreat at UN Headquarters. Over two days, they agreed on language for a public Statement on Open Science, debated scientific briefing topics for the coming year, including frontier AI, biotechnology, and ecosystems, and set out a plan to connect their work with the UN leadership at the country level. There was also an event co-hosted by the Permanent Missions of Singapore and South Africa, on “Shaping a Strong Multilateral Future: Combatting Misinformation through Science and Technology” - that strengthened connections between scientists and the diplomatic community in New York.
