“It’s being called a big win for democracy and the right to vote.” UNB Law Professor Bruno Gélinas-Faucher has spent the last 5 years fighting Section 282 of Quebec’s Election Act, a little-known rule that strips Quebec citizens of their right to vote by mail after more than two years outside the province. On August 14, 2025, this section was declared invalid and unenforceable by the Quebec Superior Court. UNB Law mourns the passing of the Honourable Gérard Vincent La Forest, C.C., K.C., former Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada and towering figure of our community. Gérard La Forest was one of Canada's greatest jurists and a renowned legal scholar. Originally from Grand Falls, New Brunswick, he graduated from UNB Law in 1949 and was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship, earning a B.A. (1951) and M.A. (1956) from Oxford University. He later received an LL.M. (1965) and a J.S.D. (1966) from Yale University. Over the course of his remarkable career, he influenced the direction of the law in Canada at every level, as well as internationally. "Gérard La Forest was UNB Law's intellectual giant and the most influential jurist to graduate from our institution. As we mourn his passing and extend our condolences to his family, we also reflect upon with great pride and admiration his contributions and ties to our Faculty," said Michael Marin, Dean of Law at UNB. After completing his studies at Oxford, Gérard La Forest was a professor at UNB Law for over a decade. Later he served as UNB's Distinguished Legal Scholar in Residence and received an honourary Doctorate of Civil Law from UNB. In recognition of his outstanding achievements and service, the UNB Law Library bears his name. He served as Assistant Deputy Attorney General of Canada (1970-1974), was a member of the Law Reform Commission of Canada, and later sat on the New Brunswick Court of Appeal. On January 16, 1985, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada, where he served with great distinction for 12 years until his retirement in 1997. Gérard La Forest will be remembered for his deep intellect, integrity, and unwavering commitment to justice, which live on in the hundreds of judgments, articles, and reports he authored during his career. Through this body of work, he will continue to inspire generations of UNB Law students and scholars, as well as jurists the world over. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.
