While Cyclone Ditwah has devastated children’s lives in Sri Lanka, UNICEF and partners are stepping in to provide some relief through playtime. Over 275,000 children are among the 1.4 million people affected by the cyclones. UNICEF has been delivering play supplies and learning kits to safety centres across the country so children can enjoy a much-needed break. Maternal malnutrition and stress are taking a tremendous toll on mothers and children in Gaza. "Two weeks ago, I met Fatma as she was visiting her baby Mohammed in a Gaza City neonatal intensive care unit. Mohammed was born premature and weighing only 1.5 kilograms. Fatma told me that unlike her first pregnancy, when she had access to antenatal checkups, vitamins and nutritious food, ‘this pregnancy has been full of displacement, lack of food, malnutrition, war and fear.’ She said she was malnourished for three months of the pregnancy, displaced three times, and her young daughter and husband were killed, two months apart, by airstrikes.” More details from Tess Ingram from UNICEF Middle East and North Africa: https://lnkd.in/eSidzDSE The ceasefire must be sustained and respected, and critical medical and nutrition aid and supplies at scale must be allowed in.
