Vox looks at why it feels like people are more impolite than ever. "It’s a question, a lingering suspicion that has bedeviled nearly every generation: Are the kids these days getting more rude, more brash, more grossly unapologetic?" writes Allie Volpe. https://lnkd.in/dGyyVndQ

Want to AI-proof your career? Or at least worry less about an AI-jobs-apocalypse? Then please listen to my discussion with Harvard Professor (and now Dean of Harvard College) David Deming. Prof. Deming is an expert in the impact of new technologies on jobs. He has studied the major tech transitions of the past 150 years. And he has found two patterns: 1) Forecasters often overestimate job losses from new technologies, in part because they don't factor in all the new jobs the technologies and broader economy create. 2) Despite massive jobs losses in sectors like farming and telecommunications (operators, switchers) from the adoption of new technologies, the number of jobs in the economy has continued to grow. Prof. Deming and I discussed the AI jobs-apocalypse predictions and the history of technology's impact on jobs on this week's episode of "Solutions." https://lnkd.in/eWVe6ZPY Prof. Deming believes that AI will create a lot of disruption (and opportunity), but he is not yet seeing evidence that it will cause anything like cataclysmic impact that some corporate executives and Silicon Valley VCs are predicting — especially in the next few years. He also thinks there are ways we can all protect our jobs and careers from disruption caused by AI. Some key points: - The biggest technology-jobs-disruption in the last 150 was not the Internet or computers. It was farming mechanization. In 1890, 40% of US workers worked on farms. Now only 2% do. Meanwhile the number of jobs has continued to grow steadily. - In the early 2000s, researchers predicted computers would eliminate 40% of jobs. Hasn't happened. Doesn't mean it won't happen this time, but has never happened before. - The adoption of generative AI is very rapid, but we are not seeing major job dislocation yet. This is in part because it takes companies a long time to change business practices. As a result, even if AI does end up having an enormous impact on jobs, the transition will likely take longer than people think. - AI will augment and change many jobs without replacing them. A recent study, in fact, showed that teams that use AI to analyze questions and make decisions AI perform better than teams that don't. The "AI colleague" acts as another smart voice in the mix. - We can ease the AI jobs transition by investing in vocational training that teaches necessary skills and also prepares students for an uncertain future. - Everyone on college campuses is already using AI. We need to stop denying that, or branding it "cheating," and start changing education to take advantage of it. - Prof. Deming's advice to students is the same as it has always been: Figure out what kind of work you love doing and then become an expert at it. https://lnkd.in/eEDDVyz9
