As industry professionals, how can we best support pre-apprentices as they launch their construction careers? Earlier this month, Webcor Outreach & Partnerships Manager Sharla Sullivan, CCA joined her industry peers in tackling this critical issue at the 2025 Construction Workforce Conference at Cypress Mandela Training Center in Oakland. In this powerful discussion, panelists explored the structural/cultural barriers to apprentice candidate success and how to overcome them through innovative partnerships, on-the-job support systems, and strategic mentorship models. Sharla was joined by fellow panelists JP Anthony from District Council 16, Mick Penn, MPA, MCA from Swinerton, Gary Taylor from Rudolph and Sletten, and Sammy David McGuire Jr, an industrial painter apprentice currently on the Biosolids Digester Facilities Project (BDFP) with the MWH/Webcor JV. The severity of our industry’s suicide rate cannot be understated—according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), construction workers have one of the highest suicide rates by profession. Since 2020, Construction Suicide Prevention Week (CSPW) has highlighted our industry's alarmingly high suicide rate and concrete actions we can take to combat future deaths by suicide. In honor of this year's CSPW, Webcorians joined two suicide prevention workshops focused on warning signs to look out for and impactful ways to express concern and support for those at risk of suicide. Safety teams also led Toolbox Talks on ways to remove the stigma associated with discussing suicide, available resources for those at risk, and more. On the heels of CSPW, let's recommit to looking out for and actively caring for one another. It could save a life. #CSPW2025

Last month, Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) Career Technical Education (CTE) students in the Building & Construction Trades summer program gathered at Cypress Mandela, Inc. for OUSD's Skilled Trades Fair. Students explored the world of construction through hands-on work stations, tool/equipment demos, and one-on-one conversations with craft professionals like Webcor Concrete Construction Manager Ivan Ramos and Specialist Alberto Vasquez. All students who complete the six-week program are guaranteed placement in Cypress Mandela's 16-week pre-apprenticeship program, creating a local pipeline to skilled trades that begins in high school. Our industry's continued support of workforce development programs has never been more vital. These programs offer accessible pathways to long-term careers in construction by connecting students with the technical skills, mentorship, and confidence needed to start the process.
